Mamelodi Sundowns Face Tough Decision Over Kutlwano Letlhaku’s European Ambitions
Mamelodi Sundowns could face a difficult decision over the future of promising young winger Kutlwano Letlhaku, whose reported interest in pursuing a career in Europe has raised questions about his long-term future at Chloorkop.
The 20-year-old attacker joined Sundowns from the School of Excellence in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s exciting young prospects. However, limited opportunities in the senior team have reportedly raised concerns about whether he can achieve his full potential while remaining at the Tshwane-based club.
Sundowns have previously demonstrated their confidence in Letlhaku by rejecting two offers from an unidentified Portuguese club in 2025. The second proposal was reportedly worth more than R30 million, including potential bonuses. His representative, Matthew Moore, subsequently confirmed that the club had turned down an offer exceeding R30 million without disclosing the interested club's identity.
Letlhaku has also gained valuable international experience, representing South Africa at the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile. Amajita reached the round of 16, with the winger featuring in three of their four matches. He also made substitute appearances against Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense during the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Despite these experiences, securing regular playing time at Sundowns remains a challenge for the youngster.
His contractual situation has added another dimension to the uncertainty. Reports in January 2026 indicated that Sundowns offered him an improved contract that would extend his stay by approximately five years. However, he reportedly declined the proposal.
According to reports, the club subsequently considered activating an extension clause. His representative has confirmed that Letlhaku remains contracted to Sundowns until June 2027.
With European interest continuing to attract attention, Sundowns must consider whether to provide him with more opportunities or risk losing a promising talent. Former captain Hlompho Kekana has highlighted the importance of playing time while cautioning against moving abroad before gaining sufficient senior experience.
The coming months could therefore prove crucial in determining whether Letlhaku remains part of Sundowns' long-term plans or pursues his ambitions elsewhere.
