Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed how club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe supported the team following their unexpected elimination from the CAF Champions League.
The Tshwane giants were knocked out in the second qualifying round by Angolan outfit Wiliete SC after the two-legged tie ended 1-1 on aggregate, with Sundowns losing out on the away-goals rule. The result brought their continental campaign to a disappointing conclusion.
Speaking after Sundowns secured a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday evening, Cardoso reflected on the club's response to the setback.
The Portuguese tactician admitted that the elimination was difficult to accept, particularly given Sundowns' impressive record in African competitions. The club has reached the semi-finals and finals in recent seasons, while Cardoso has also featured in three consecutive continental finals.
According to the 54-year-old coach, Motsepe played an important role in helping the squad regain its confidence. He praised the chairman for his supportive approach, saying he delivered the right message and motivation while encouraging everyone to concentrate on the challenges ahead.
Cardoso described the victory over Gallants as a demonstration of character, emphasising the need to reassure supporters that the team remains committed to defending the club's badge.
Sundowns must now put the disappointment behind them and turn their attention to the Betway Premiership, where they are scheduled to host Durban City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday evening.
