Cape Town – South African Test captain Temba Bavuma believes there is no substitute for spending time in the middle as the Proteas prepare for a crucial Test match at Newlands following a challenging outing in Durban.
After a performance that fell short of expectations, Bavuma emphasised that the best preparation for Test cricket remains playing competitive cricket. The captain acknowledged that while training sessions and net practice are valuable, nothing replicates the pressures and demands of a live match situation.
“The best way to prepare for Test cricket is to play Test cricket,” Bavuma said as the team shifted its focus to the series decider in Cape Town.
The Proteas have faced questions about consistency after an uneven display in Durban, where conditions proved difficult and key moments went against them. However, Bavuma remains confident that the squad has the experience and quality needed to respond positively.
The captain highlighted the importance of learning from mistakes rather than dwelling on setbacks. According to Bavuma, the team has carefully analysed its performance and identified areas requiring improvement, particularly in maintaining discipline with both bat and ball over extended periods.
Newlands presents a different challenge from Durban, with conditions often favouring a more balanced contest between bat and ball. South Africa will be hoping home familiarity and strong crowd support can provide an advantage in the decisive encounter.
Several senior players are expected to play key roles, while the bowling attack will aim to apply sustained pressure and take advantage of any assistance offered by the Cape Town surface. The batting unit, meanwhile, will be targeting longer partnerships and greater consistency at the crease.
Bavuma also stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, noting that successful teams are often judged by how they respond after disappointment. He expressed confidence that the Proteas are motivated and prepared for the challenge that awaits at Newlands.
With the series on the line, South Africa now turns its attention to one of the country’s most iconic cricket venues, where another chapter in its Test cricket journey is set to unfold.
