KwaZulu-Natal-Born Star Makes History as First South African to Play in Malawi's Top Flight
A South African footballer has broken new ground in Malawi after making history as the first player from South Africa to feature in the country's top-flight league.
Wandile Lethuxolo Mthethwa, a 24-year-old left wing-back from KwaZulu-Natal, achieved the milestone after joining Creck Sporting Club, a team competing in Malawi's FDH Bank Premiership. His move represents a significant moment for the player and could open new opportunities for other South African footballers seeking careers beyond their home country's borders.
Mthethwa completed his move to the Lilongwe-based club in September 2026, signing a three-year contract that is expected to keep him at the club until 2029. His arrival attracted attention because South African players have traditionally pursued opportunities in leagues such as those in Europe and other established African football markets.
The former Maritzburg United reserve-team player now has an opportunity to establish himself in a new football environment while helping Creck Sporting Club compete in Malawi's top division.
Mthethwa's journey to Malawi has been shaped by his development through South African football structures. He previously featured for Nkosiyethu Football Academy and was associated with Maritzburg United's reserve setup during the 2023–2024 period. He also played for Gauteng-based Free Agents FC before securing the opportunity to continue his career abroad.
An important detail in his story is that Mthethwa did not make an appearance in South Africa's Betway Premiership before moving to Malawi. His experience instead came through lower-level football and development structures, making his breakthrough in another country's top division a particularly notable achievement.
At Creck Sporting Club, Mthethwa is working under Ernest 'Chirwali' Mtawali, the former Mamelodi Sundowns captain and South African Footballer of the Year in 1985. Mtawali's appointment as Creck's head coach in June 2026 brought considerable experience to a club battling to improve its position in the Malawian league.
The opportunity could prove valuable for Mthethwa, who will be looking to establish himself as a reliable performer while adapting to a different style of football. Playing abroad can challenge a footballer's tactical understanding, physical preparation and ability to adjust to unfamiliar surroundings.
For South African supporters, his progress will be worth following, particularly because he has achieved a milestone that could encourage other players to consider opportunities in neighbouring African countries.
Malawi's top flight offers a different competitive environment from South Africa's professional leagues, but it also provides a platform for players to gain experience, develop their careers and attract attention from other clubs.
Mthethwa's three-year contract gives him time to settle at Creck and demonstrate what he can contribute to the team. However, the significance of his move extends beyond his individual ambitions: becoming the first South African to sign for a Malawian top-flight club represents a new chapter in the football relationship between the two countries.
Although his journey is still developing, Mthethwa has already secured a place in Malawi football history through his groundbreaking move. His next challenge will be to turn that historic opportunity into consistent performances and help Creck Sporting Club achieve its objectives.
For a player who did not reach South Africa's top division before moving abroad, this represents an important step forward—and a reminder that football opportunities can emerge in unexpected places.
