Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp has questioned Thierry Henry's silence on the quality of football played during the Soweto Derby, despite the French football legend reportedly praising the event.
Henry's presence and assessment of the occasion attracted attention, but Middendorp believes there was another important aspect worth discussing: the standard of football displayed by the two teams.
The experienced German coach acknowledged Henry's positive assessment of the event but expressed curiosity about whether the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker had shared his thoughts on the actual performance of the players.
"Great assessment of the event by Thierry Henry, but what did he say about the soccer that was played on the day?" a curious Middendorp tells KickOff.
Middendorp suggested that hearing Henry's technical opinion about the match would have provided another interesting perspective, especially considering his experience at the highest level of European and international football.
"It would have been good to hear something from Thierry Henry, but I haven't found any quote by him saying even one word about the match itself."
The comments have brought attention to the difference between celebrating the atmosphere surrounding a major football occasion and evaluating the quality of the game itself.
The Soweto Derby, which features Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, remains one of South Africa's biggest football attractions, drawing significant interest from supporters and football personalities.
While the occasion is widely recognised for its passionate supporters and intense rivalry, Middendorp's remarks raise questions about whether the football played deserves the same level of attention as the spectacle surrounding it.
