Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has emphasised the importance of carefully managing Oswin Appollis, describing the talented winger as a valuable asset whom the club must protect.

Speaking about the South African international, Ouaddou made it clear that Appollis should not be expected to operate like a machine, stressing that players also need adequate recovery and proper workload management.

“He is not a robot – we are protecting our diamond,” Ouaddou said.

The coach's remarks highlight the importance of balancing performance expectations with the physical demands of professional football, particularly for players who carry significant responsibilities within their respective teams.

Appollis has attracted considerable attention since joining Orlando Pirates, with his attacking qualities, pace, creativity and ability to trouble opposition defenders making him an important option in the Buccaneers' squad.

His performances have also raised expectations among supporters, many of whom see him as one of the players capable of making a significant contribution to the club's ambitions.

However, Ouaddou's comments suggest that the Pirates technical team is conscious of the need to avoid placing unnecessary physical demands on the winger.

Professional football involves a demanding schedule, with players often required to compete in domestic league matches, cup competitions and continental tournaments. Without proper workload management, the risk of fatigue and injuries can increase.

For a player with Appollis' attacking qualities, maintaining fitness and consistency will be particularly important as Orlando Pirates continue pursuing their objectives.

Ouaddou's description of Appollis as a diamond also demonstrates the value he places on the winger and the importance of ensuring that his talent is properly developed.

The message from the Pirates coach is straightforward: Appollis is an important player, but his long-term contribution to the team matters more than forcing him to play every minute.

Pirates supporters will undoubtedly hope that the careful management of the winger allows him to maintain his fitness, continue improving and deliver consistently impressive performances for the Soweto giants.
