Ouaddou Explains Why Pirates Are Protecting Oswin Appollis

Orlando Pirates supporters have been given an explanation for Oswin Appollis’ reduced playing time, with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou making it clear that the talented attacker remains an important part of his plans.

The Moroccan coach has dismissed concerns surrounding Appollis’ limited involvement in recent matches, explaining that the technical team are deliberately managing his workload to prevent fatigue. Rather than losing confidence in the Bafana Bafana international, Pirates are taking precautions because they understand how valuable he could be during the remainder of the campaign.

Speaking to journalists at the Carling Knockout media event at the PSL headquarters in Parktown on Thursday, Ouaddou described Appollis as one of the best players in South Africa. He also reminded supporters that footballers need sufficient recovery time, regardless of their quality.

The coach explained that Appollis enjoyed an excellent first season after arriving from Polokwane City, quickly adapting to the expectations and demands of playing for one of the country’s biggest football clubs. His performances helped establish him as an important attacking option for the Buccaneers.

However, his responsibilities did not end with the domestic campaign. Appollis also represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding international commitments to an already demanding football schedule.

Ouaddou believes those demands must be considered when deciding how frequently the winger should feature.

The Pirates coach explained that Appollis had given everything for his country and that fatigue was understandable after such an intense period. He used his own experience as a professional footballer, having balanced international commitments with club football in Europe, to explain why managing players’ physical condition is essential.

His message was particularly clear when he described Appollis as a diamond that the club must protect.

The coach also indicated that Pirates expect to benefit from their decision to give the player sufficient recovery time, suggesting that supporters should expect to see more of him as the campaign progresses.

The situation is interesting because Appollis had become one of the notable attacking figures at Pirates following his arrival from Polokwane City. His reduced minutes have naturally attracted attention, particularly among supporters who want to see the winger play a more prominent role.

FARPost reported that Appollis had started only one of Pirates’ four matches after the September international break. He had also registered two goals and three assists in nine Betway Premiership appearances at the time of the report.

Those numbers underline why his availability matters to the club. Pirates need players capable of creating opportunities, stretching opposition defences and contributing in the final third, particularly when competing across multiple competitions.

The Buccaneers are also preparing for their Carling Knockout quarter-final against Sekhukhune United, making squad management an important consideration for Ouaddou. The match presents another opportunity for Pirates to demonstrate their ambitions in domestic cup football.

There is also a bigger picture to consider. Managing players is not simply about selecting the strongest possible starting eleven for every match. It is about ensuring that important individuals remain physically capable of contributing when the biggest challenges arrive.

For Appollis, this period could provide an opportunity to recover and regain the sharpness that made him such an influential player during his first season at the club.

For Pirates supporters, Ouaddou’s comments should offer reassurance that the winger has not been forgotten. The coach clearly recognises his quality and understands the contribution he can make.

Ultimately, the decision to protect Appollis will be judged by what happens on the pitch. If he returns to his best and delivers important performances during the demanding months ahead, the club’s cautious approach could prove to be a valuable decision.

For now, Ouaddou’s message is straightforward: Pirates are not prepared to risk burning out one of their most valuable attacking players.
