Former AmaTuks Star’s Incredible Story: How He Balanced Football, Law Exams And Namibia’s Historic COSAFA Triumph
Footballers are often praised for their dedication, discipline and sacrifices on the pitch, but former University of Pretoria midfielder Ronald Ketjijere has revealed an extraordinary chapter of his career that demonstrates the importance of education alongside professional football.
The former Namibia captain, who played in South Africa's Premier Soccer League with the University of Pretoria, had to overcome challenges that extended far beyond the football field while pursuing his dream of becoming a qualified lawyer.
One of the most remarkable moments came in 2015 when Namibia enjoyed a historic COSAFA Cup campaign, with Ketjijere playing an important leadership role in the team's successful journey.
However, while his teammates were concentrating on preparations and matches, the midfielder had another important responsibility waiting for him away from the training ground: university examinations.
Recalling the demanding experience, Ketjijere explained how he had to travel between the national team's camp in the Rustenburg and Sun City areas and Pretoria to write his examinations before returning to join his teammates.
“I had to drive between our base in the Rustenburg and Sun City areas and Pretoria to sit my exams, then return to camp,” he recalled.
The experience highlighted the extraordinary commitment required to balance professional football with academic responsibilities, particularly when both demanded his attention at the same time.
Ketjijere's determination was not simply about obtaining a qualification. He understood that a football career could be unpredictable and that having an education would provide him with opportunities beyond the playing field.
His decision to pursue law eventually paid off. While representing AmaTuks in South Africa, he continued working towards his Bachelor of Laws qualification at the University of Pretoria.
His dedication was also recognised by the university, which celebrated his achievements as a student-athlete alongside fellow footballer Tristyn Coetsee in September 2015.
On the football side, Ketjijere captained Namibia to their first-ever COSAFA Cup title in 2015, a historic achievement that brought enormous pride to the country.
His journey also demonstrated that professional footballers can successfully pursue academic ambitions when they combine discipline, sacrifice and effective time management.
After leaving AmaTuks in 2016, Ketjijere returned to Namibia to focus on his legal career while continuing his involvement in football.
Today, his story remains an inspiring example for young South African and African footballers who want to build successful careers both on and off the pitch.
For Ketjijere, winning a major international trophy was special, but completing his education ensured that his future would not depend entirely on football.
