Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza has indicated that South African football is ready for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology as concerns over controversial refereeing decisions continue to dominate discussions.
The development could mark a significant step towards modernising football officiating in South Africa, where questionable decisions by match officials have repeatedly sparked heated debates among supporters, coaches and club administrators.
VAR technology is designed to assist referees in reviewing important match incidents, including goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity. Its introduction is expected to help reduce major officiating errors and improve fairness during matches.
Khoza's remarks suggest that the PSL is supportive of bringing the technology into the domestic game, although its implementation would require careful planning, financial investment and adequate technical infrastructure.
The issue of refereeing has become increasingly sensitive in South African football, with several clubs and supporters expressing frustration over decisions they believe have affected the outcomes of important encounters.
The introduction of VAR could therefore provide an additional layer of assistance to match officials while improving confidence in the fairness of competitions.
However, implementing the system would also require trained personnel, specialised equipment and proper arrangements at stadiums across the country.
For now, Khoza's comments have generated fresh discussion about the future of refereeing in the Premier Soccer League and whether South Africa could soon join other football leagues that already use the technology.
The big question remains how soon the PSL can turn its support for VAR into a practical reality.
