Kaizer Chiefs have received a timely boost ahead of the Soweto Derby after Wandile Duba’s hat-trick inspired a 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout, bringing their four-match winless run to an end.
Duba’s impressive performance provided Chiefs with a much-needed result as they prepare for their upcoming clash against their fierce rivals. The convincing victory could help restore confidence within the squad after a difficult spell without a win.
Despite the positive result, coach Da Cruz has remained measured in his assessment of the team’s progress, stressing that efficiency has been a major difference in their recent performances.
"The difference is efficiency... sometimes we made a better game and we didn't win."
His comments suggest that chiefs have previously produced encouraging performances without turning them into victories. Against TS Galaxy, however, they were able to convert their opportunities into goals, with Duba leading the way through his outstanding finishing.
The coach also expressed confidence in the team’s playing approach, indicating that the players are beginning to trust the system and believe in their ability to improve.
"We’re having confidence in our model game \[...\] we are going to recover and we will prepare the game for this Saturday," he told SuperSport.
That confidence will be important as Chiefs turn their attention to the Soweto Derby, a fixture that carries significant expectations for both the players and supporters. A victory over TS Galaxy provides encouragement, but the upcoming contest will present a different challenge.
Duba’s hat-trick could prove particularly valuable for his confidence, while the team’s overall performance offers a foundation to build on. However, Chiefs will need to maintain their attacking efficiency and defensive discipline if they are to carry the momentum into the derby.
For Da Cruz and his players, the priority will be to prepare thoroughly rather than become carried away by one result.
The victory has given Chiefs fresh encouragement, but the Soweto Derby will provide a stronger test of whether their improvement can be sustained.
