Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has unveiled his preliminary squad for South Africa’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya, with a former Kaizer Chiefs star among the players selected ahead of the crucial encounters.
South Africa will face Kenya in two matches scheduled for November, with the Kenyan national team managed by former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy. The double-header presents Mosimane’s side with an important opportunity to build on their promising start and strengthen their chances of reaching the 2027 AFCON tournament.
According to a report published by Soccer Laduma on Friday, October 23, 2026, South Africa began their qualifying campaign on a positive note last month, securing consecutive victories over Guinea and Eritrea. The results gave the team a valuable advantage as they continue their efforts to secure a place in the continental competition.
Mosimane will be eager to maintain that winning momentum when his players meet Kenya. His preliminary selection includes several footballers who were absent during the previous FIFA international break, giving the coach additional options as he assesses his squad for the upcoming fixtures.
Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Lyle Foster are among the notable names included after missing the previous international window. Their availability could provide a significant boost to the team's preparations, particularly as South Africa look to remain consistent in the qualifying campaign.
Another player attracting attention is Sabah FK defender Aden McCarthy, whose inclusion follows an impressive achievement in European football. The defender recently scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Borussia Dortmund, a milestone that has increased interest in his development and potential contribution to the national team.
His selection gives him an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities and compete for a place in the final squad ahead of the important matches against Kenya.
The fixtures will also attract attention because of Benni McCarthy’s involvement with the Kenyan side. Having previously represented South Africa, his presence in the opposing technical setup adds another interesting dimension to the contest.
The first meeting is scheduled for November 13 at the Orlando Amstel Arena, before South Africa travel to Nairobi for the return fixture four days later. Playing the same opponent twice within a short period will demand tactical discipline, effective preparation and consistency from Mosimane’s players.
Although the preliminary squad offers an early indication of the coach’s plans, the final selection and performances during the matches will be decisive. South Africa will be aiming to collect maximum points from both encounters and continue their progress towards qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
