Manqoba Mngqithi has reached another significant milestone in his coaching career after guiding Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC into the group stages of the CAF Champions League with an emphatic victory over Madagascar outfit CFFA.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows coach has made an impressive start to life at Yanga, winning the Community Shield and securing qualification for the quarterfinals of Africa’s premier club competition. His latest achievement further strengthens his reputation as a coach capable of competing at the highest level of African football.
Young Africans confirmed their qualification on Wednesday after defeating CFFA 4-1 in the second leg of their second preliminary-round encounter. The victory secured an overwhelming 8-1 aggregate triumph, making the Tanzanian side the first team to reach this season’s group stages.
Yanga took control of the match in the 27th minute when Ibrahim Kazimoto opened the scoring. Their dominance continued after the break, with Selemani Mwalimu finding the net twice in the 49th and 53rd minutes to put the contest beyond the visitors’ reach.
CFFA managed to score a consolation goal in the 75th minute, but teenage forward Juma Issa Abushuri restored Yanga’s three-goal advantage in the 82nd minute, completing a convincing performance.
The qualification provides Mngqithi with an opportunity to test his squad against some of the continent’s strongest clubs as Young Africans pursue continental success.
Meanwhile, the South African tactician has made claims about previously turning down an opportunity to coach Kaizer Chiefs. According to reports, Mngqithi believed the club’s proposed transfer budget was insufficient to build a competitive squad.
He reportedly claimed that Amakhosi were prepared to offer R20 million to sign seven players, adding that Mamelodi Sundowns could have recruited a single Premier Soccer League player for that amount during his tenure.
However, the reported details of the offer have not been independently confirmed.
For now, Mngqithi’s priority will be maintaining Yanga’s impressive form as they prepare for the challenges of the CAF Champions League group stages.
