Da Cruz Blames ' 12th Man': Accuses Referee of Favoring Orlando Pirates in Derby Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, a result that has ignited a fierce reaction from coach Fernando Da Cruz.

The loss, secured by goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi, marked the Chiefs’ first setback in the Betway Premiership season, and prompted a strongly worded critique from the coach regarding the match officiating.

The game unfolded at FNB Stadium, with Chiefs taking an early lead through Pule Mmodi before ultimately succumbing to a Pirates comeback.

While the immediate aftermath of the match saw standard expressions of frustration from the Chiefs camp, Da Cruz’s comments quickly escalated the situation, suggesting a far deeper issue than simply a tactical disadvantage.

Da Cruz’s accusations centered around referee Luxolo Badi, whom he vehemently suggested acted as a partisan supporter for the Buccaneers.

He argued that Badi’s decisions throughout the match were not impartial, specifically pointing to the opening goal, which he believed was incorrectly awarded for offside, and a Pirates player’s near-miss with a red card. “Pirates play as 12 and not 11,” Da Cruz stated, a declaration that immediately raised eyebrows and fueled speculation about a significant bias.

It is clear that Da Cruz felt the referee’s decisions fundamentally altered the balance of the game.

He argued that a red card issued to a Pirates player would have created a clear advantage, transforming the match into a contest between 11 and 10 players.

This perspective highlights a recurring concern in football – the impact of officiating errors on the outcome of a match.

Beyond the refereeing, Da Cruz also acknowledged shortcomings within his own team.

He admitted that Chiefs failed to capitalize on their early lead and ultimately ran out of energy in the second half, allowing Pirates to seize control.

The coach’s assessment of the situation suggests a lack of experience within the squad contributed to their inability to maintain their intensity throughout the 90 minutes.

The defeat has had a tangible impact on Chiefs’ league standing, leaving them fifth with 14 points after nine games, a considerable distance behind their rivals, Orlando Pirates.

The loss of their unbeaten record, coupled with the current point deficit, represents a significant setback for Da Cruz and his team, and underscores the critical role that both performance and officiating play in determining success within the highly competitive Betway Premiership.
