Premier League Player Shares How Alcohol Took Control of His Life and What Helped Him Reclaim It

FABIO CARVALHO asserts that he gave up alcohol for Jesus – and that immersing himself in the Bible revived his career.

The Portugal midfielder had a challenging stint at Liverpool before moving to Brentford in August 2024, during which he indulged in nightlife and excessive drinking in Merseyside.

As his opportunities dwindled, his situation worsened, jeopardizing his professional football career.

Carvalho, 24, attended church in his youth but was not as devoted as he could have been.

However, towards the end of his time at Anfield, he found comfort in religion.

He recounted: “I began to go out, started drinking, and was engaged in reckless behavior off the pitch.

“I would return home from clubs and cry my heart out. I felt so empty.

“Then I picked up my Bible. That doesn’t mean I changed overnight, but I realized there was a void in my heart that only Jesus could fill.”

Carvalho, who shared a video of his baptism in January 2025, is now part of a supportive group of players at Brentford.

Along with Brazilian striker Igor Thiago and Englishman Josh Dasilva, he turns to scripture in challenging times and all three enjoy gospel or worship music.

He added: “It’s great to come together and share each other’s burdens. It makes life easier.”

Manager Keith Andrews is not surprised at all that Brentford entered the weekend in a European position.

Facing Hull today, Andrews remarked: “Some fans, especially those of a certain age, have been loyal Brentford supporters for so long.

“It’s wonderful for them to relish these moments, competing against some of the biggest clubs globally.

“We embrace the challenge weekly, and we’re constantly evolving.

“I’m not surprised because I feel it every day. I genuinely enjoy it.”
