Randfontein Cricket Club suffered its first defeat of the season after a competitive encounter against visiting Indian side IBS Cricket Academy at the Randfontein Cricket Club in Greenhills on October 23.

In a closely contested 50-over match, Randfontein posted a respectable total of 239 for eight wickets before IBS Cricket Academy chased down the target, scoring 242 for five wickets in 49.3 overs to secure a five-wicket victory.

Randfontein made a challenging start to its innings, losing four wickets early on. However, the middle order responded strongly to help the home side recover and put a competitive score on the board.

Juanrey Zaayman was Randfontein’s standout performer with the bat, scoring 101 runs off 103 balls. He was well supported by Jimmy Reynolds, who contributed 60 runs to help stabilise the innings and strengthen the home side’s position.

Their partnership proved crucial in helping Randfontein reach 239 runs after its allotted 50 overs, giving the visitors a challenging target to chase.

A tense chase

IBS Cricket Academy, however, showed determination in its reply, with Navankur Jha delivering an outstanding batting performance. He scored 127 runs off 141 balls, providing the backbone of the visitors’ successful chase.

Priyam Baalchandani also played an important role, contributing 74 runs as IBS steadily worked towards the target. The visitors eventually reached 242 for five wickets in 49.3 overs, winning the match by five wickets in a thrilling finish.

Randfontein captain Jannie Schultz reflected positively on the match despite the disappointing result, praising his team’s recovery with the bat and its efforts with the ball.

“All around, it was a very nice game. We lost four wickets early on, but the middle order came through for us. The 101 from Juanrey and 60 from Jimmy put us back in the game,” Schultz said.

“We bowled very well, and they needed six from the last over. Unfortunately, they got the six,” he said.

Despite the loss, Schultz said the team would take valuable lessons from the encounter as it continued its season.

“We lost the game, and it was our first defeat of the season in seven games, but we learnt a lot from the game,” he concluded.

Although Randfontein’s unbeaten run came to an end, the match provided an opportunity for the team to test itself against international opposition, while IBS Cricket Academy demonstrated its batting strength to claim a memorable victory in Greenhills.
