JESUS OWONO has been left devastated following his tragic collision with Jesus de Miguel, which saw the footballer die aged just 30.
Tenerife striker De Miguel passed away on Tuesday morning from “accidental chest trauma” after inadvertently clashing with Owono as the Andorra goalkeeper rushed out to clear a loose ball during the closing stages of Monday night’s game.
The awful incident saw the match abandoned and has left Spanish football in mourning.
Owono, 25, is said to have been left deeply affected.
The Athletic report that a source close to a team-mate of the goalkeeper said: “Owono is destroyed, locked in his house and disconnected from the world.
“Right now, he doesn’t even know who he is.”
The Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) has pledged to support Owono through counselling.
Following De Miguel’s passing, Owono released a statement via his club.
It read: “These are being the most difficult days of my life.
“I am struggling to find the words, and it is very hard for me to process anything that has happened.
“I feel immense pain over the loss of Jesus. I am thinking of him, his family, and all the people who loved him.
“I know there will be many matters to address, and I will face whatever comes with complete respect.
“But right now, honestly, I cannot think of anything other than Jesus and the grief we are experiencing.
“Rest in peace, Jesus.”
Owono – who was sent off for the challenge – initially began walking off the pitch, before heading back to check on De Miguel as medics rushed on.
De Miguel – who was a married father-of-one – was laid to rest yesterday.
Both Tenerife and Andorra have seen their scheduled matches this weekend postponed in the wake of their grief.
And the AFE has called on authorities to postpone more games across Spanish football.
Owono’s team-mate Lautaro Spatz revealed that his team have been left “completely broken” by the incident.
Spatz said in a statement: “There are moments when football loses its meaning.
“Moments that mark you forever and make you realise how fragile life can be. What we went through is something none of us will ever forget.
“A tragedy that has left us completely broken, speechless, and with a sadness that is difficult to explain.
“First and foremost, I want to express my deepest condolences and all my love to Jesus’s family, friends, and loved ones, as well as to the entire Tenerife community and the entire football family.
“Since yesterday, the entire FC Andorra squad has been shocked, devastated, and deeply affected by what has happened. It is a tragedy we never imagined we would experience on a football pitch.”
