Manchester United stick with Michael Carrick as club fail to agree on replacement - Paper Round

Manchester United are struggling to agree on a candidate to replace Michael Carrick, while Newcastle United have found a new head of recruitment. Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho may choose between West Ham and Getafe, and Burnley want Fabio Celestini.

United to keep Carrick

The i Paper believes that Manchester United have decided to stick with Carrick for at least the rest of the week because there is no obvious replacement.

Despite a host of potential replacements linked with the job, the lack of an out-and-out frontrunner has seen the club hierarchy continue to put faith in their current head coach.

He is also benefitting from United’s awareness that they have continued to swap head coaches without success.

The paper explains: "Several insiders have told The i Paper that CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox could not make a call on sacking Carrick yet until they believe a suitable successor is lined up.

"Dismissing Carrick, and his coaching staff, will cost the club a considerable amount, on top of the millions and millions they have already wasted paying off previously sacked managers. So they must be certain the next coach is fully interested, and worth making a change for.

"One source has claimed that there is a feeling that the club need to stop the cycle of sacking managers – hence why Carrick could get a while longer yet.

"If there was a proper standout alternative, Carrick would be gone. Senior figures, however, cannot agree on who could come in as a replacement."

Newcastle appoint new transfer guru

Newcastle United have landed Tomas Amaral as their new head of recruitment.

The Portuguese is credited with bringing Enzo Fernandez from River Plate to Benfica in 2022, before his huge transfers, first to Chelsea and then to Manchester City.

The Newcastle Chronicle reports: "Newcastle United have landed highly-rated transfer supremo Tomas Amaral as their new head of recruitment.

"The Portuguese talent spotter comes in following 2026 departures for chief scout Steve Nickson and football executive Andy Howe.

"Amaral has enjoyed previous success at Spartak Moscow and Benfica and his major transfer success story was Argentina World Cup winner and £125m Man City star Enzo Fernandez, who he lured to Lisbon from River Plate in 2022."

Sancho offered to West Ham

West Ham have been offered the chance to sign former Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, according to The Sun.

Sancho has been linked with a move to Getafe, with wages far under his recent £300,000-a-week salary proposed.

Sancho has failed to land a deal in the four months since leaving United in the summer, when they declined to exercise a 12-month extension on his contract.

The paper reports: "The Manchester United flop has been unemployed for the past four months and is still looking for his next club.

"Sancho, 26, saw out the length of his five-year, £300,000-a-week United contract, which expired in June.

"LaLiga outfit Getafe have tabled a concrete offer for the winger.

"But with proposed wages of under £10,000 a week, Sancho is believed to be exploring other options.

"It is unclear whether the Hammers are planning to take discussions further."

Burnley target Celestini

Fabio Celestini is in the frame to take over Championship side Burnley.

The Lancastrian side are 22nd in the second tier after a 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City, leading to Nicky Hayen’s departure.

The Athletic reports that a potential deal is moving quickly, with the Swiss already in England.

The website claims: ”Former CSKA Moscow boss Fabio Celestini is a strong contender to be named Burnley’s new head coach.

"Burnley sacked Nicky Hayen on Saturday following a 4-1 loss to Lincoln City, a result that left them 22nd in the Championship, the league’s final relegation place.

"Celestini, 50, features prominently among the names to be appointed Hayen’s successor, according to sources with knowledge of discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships.

"Sources added Celestini has already travelled to England with his staff, but the details of the potential appointment are still to be agreed."
