Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies recorded their first win at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, edging Lekie Football Girls 2-1 at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia on Wednesday.

Coach Godfrey Sapula made three changes to the team that drew with FC Masar in their opening match, with Asanda Hadebe, Amanda Mthandi and Nthabiseng Majiya coming into the starting XI for Khutso Pila, Wendy Shongwe and Isabella Ludwig respectively.

After a frustrating opening result against Masar, the inaugural champions were determined to claim maximum points and get their campaign back on track.

Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute when Refilwe Tholakele finished from a Ronnel Donnelly assist to give the South African champions a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Lekie responded after the break and found an equaliser through substitute Nakoma Shalom, who converted an opportunity created by Ajara Nchout to make it 1-1.

With the match seemingly heading towards a draw, Sundowns grabbed a dramatic late winner in the 88th minute when Lekie defender Yvana Yakana Makana inadvertently turned the ball into her own net.

The result gives Sundowns three valuable points as they continue their pursuit of a third CAF Women’s Champions League title.

Lekie remained at the bottom of the group with one match remaining, leaving their hopes of reaching the knockout stage hanging in the balance.

Sundowns will now look to build on this victory in their final group-stage fixture as they continue their quest for continental glory.
