The damning Daniel Farke stat that should have Paraag Marathe doubting Leeds United contract

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth was foreseeable, but it was still another defeat for Daniel Farke. Leeds United have now gone five Premier League games without securing a win.

Leeds picked up eight points from their first four matches. Wins over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, either side of draws against Crystal Palace and Brighton, saw Leeds make a blistering 26-27 start.

But since then, Leeds have gone winless in five games. They have managed to score just two goals in that run, losing twice to Arsenal and Bournemouth away, and drawing three more. Farke has a big problem.

Away from home, Farke and Leeds have always struggled – even when in the Championship. Farke lost just 15 of 95 Championship games as Leeds boss, including play-offs; 12 of those were away from home.

Daniel Farke’s dismal away record in the Premier League

Saturday could have been very different had Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it 1-0 to Leeds, missing from close range before bundling the ball in with his arm. Obviously, the goal was ruled out after VAR’s ruling.

Evanilson and Amine Adli saw Bournemouth win again, even if Marco Rose admitted his side were lucky and Leeds will win “many points” throughout the campaign. But delve a little deeper; the loss is a worry.

Farke has taken charge of 49 Premier League games throughout his managerial career for Norwich and Leeds. Of those 49, Farke has won just five times, the last of which came on the opening day at Forest.

Last season, Farke won two – the memorable 2-1 win at Manchester United thanks to Noah Okafor’s brace and the 3-1 win at Wolves, which saw Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anton Stach and Okafor all score goals.

That is a rate of just over 10% of away games in the top tier. Compared to other current managers, the Leeds gaffer is miles below the average. Michael Carrick is on the verge of the sack, but he’s won 36.4%.

Mikel Arteta, obviously, leads the way with an enormous 53.9%. Other mid-table managers like Oliver Glasner (35.6%) or David Moyes (30%) are largely between 25% and 30%. Farke is a damning 10.2%.

If Leeds want to reach the next level, Farke must improve this

As things stand, Farke is out of contract at the end of the season, but there is an agreement in principle between the German and the club. It comes at the same time that Farke has sacked his representatives.

There is no doubt that Farke has been excellent. His careful, methodical approach has helped Leeds learn from the past. Slowly building, carefully placing the building blocks rather than dropping them on top.

But Farke is in uncharted territory. He has never managed a club with the potential, the aspiration, and the reach to qualify for Europe. That is what he has turned Leeds into. Can he adapt and push on again?

He adapted last season when Leeds were losing; his job was on the line. He made Leeds hard to beat, but other sides are working them out. If he is to take Leeds to the next level, his away form must improve.

But if he fails to do so, Marathe needs to reconsider a contract. Farke deserves huge plaudits for his work so far, but if he cannot improve away form, Leeds won’t go to the next level – is a new deal the right idea?
