THE Spanish footballers’ union (AFE) has requested the postponement of all matches scheduled for this weekend following the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel.
De Miguel tragically died on Tuesday after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, with his funeral taking place today.
Tenerife’s match against Granada, as well as Andorra’s fixture against Mallorca, have already been canceled, along with several midweek cup games.
While Spanish teams participated in European competitions this week, the AFE is advocating for a pause as players grapple with this devastating news.
AFE president David Aganzo is attending De Miguel’s funeral in Navahermosa, where a statement was released expressing condolences from players nationwide.
The statement read: “The Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) has reached out to players at all levels to assess their sentiments after the death of Jesús de Miguel. The consensus among the group is that this weekend’s scheduled matches should not proceed.

FAMILY’S PAIN
De Miguel’s family left with ‘impossible void’ as mourners attend funeral
“The players have conveyed their profound sorrow over this loss and recognize that the emotional and human conditions are not suitable for facing competition as it normally occurs.
“Thus, they have communicated to AFE their belief that it would be most respectful to suspend the matchday, acknowledging the grief and sensitivity surrounding such shocking news among colleagues.
“Once again, football has an opportunity to prove that, above competitions, sporting and economic interests, and other considerations, there are people.
“Because there are times when humanity, respect, and solidarity must prevail over any competition.”
De Miguel’s death has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, prompting fans to gather and lay flowers in vigil at the club’s stadium.
The 30-year-old father’s agent, Manuel Hernandez, released a statement on behalf of the family.
It stated: “Thank you for embracing him, for remembering him, and for standing with us.
“We are at a loss for words to express our gratitude for every message, phone call, and gesture of kindness we have received.
“Thank you to everyone who has honored his memory – his colleagues, friends, supporters, and all the clubs that have offered their condolences and support during this immensely painful time.
“The affection felt for Jesus and the impressions he has left on so many will forever remain with us.”
Andorra goalkeeper Owono was sent off due to the challenge and is coping with the aftermath of the incident.
In a heartfelt message from his club, he expressed: “These have been the most challenging days of my life.
“I struggle to find the right words, and it is extremely difficult for me to process everything that has happened.
“I feel overwhelming sorrow over the loss of Jesus. My thoughts are with him, his family, and everyone who loved him.
“I recognize there will be many matters to address, and I will handle what comes with total respect.
“But at this moment, honestly, I can only think about Jesús and the pain we are all experiencing.
“Rest in peace, Jesus.”
De Miguel’s family has requested privacy to cope with this tragic situation.
The statement concluded: “We need to mourn in the peace and quiet that this situation necessitates.
“We are grateful for the love, concern, and support that his loss has inspired, and we sincerely appreciate it.”
