Tina Nijkamp questions RTL Viaplay takeover risk
Max Verstappen

RTL’s streaming service Videoland acquired Viaplay’s Dutch operations for €142 million, securing domestic broadcasting rights for Formula 1, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, and PDC darts, mediacourant.nl reported.

The 142 Million Euro Streaming Acquisition

The deal stands as one of the largest streaming acquisitions in the Netherlands, transferring approximately fifty former Viaplay employees and an established subscriber base over to DPG Media and RTL. Alongside live racing and English and German soccer matches, the package includes French Ligue 1 and various other sporting events. Television analyst Tina Nijkamp, writing in De Telegraaf, questioned whether the heavy price tag buys genuine media loyalty or simply rides the wave of a single athlete’s dominance. TV expert Tina Nijkamp and the makers of the DutchMedia Podcast, Taco Jelgersma and David de Jong, raise questions regarding the takeover of Viaplay Netherlands by RTL parent company DPG Media.

Max Verstappen and the Financial Risk for Videoland

Nijkamp noted in her commentary that casual viewers who subscribe primarily for Verstappen's victories may cancel their subscriptions if race results falter, noting that subscribers are not permanent fixtures that transfer automatically during corporate moves. The popularity of Formula 1 in the Netherlands is primarily thanks to Max Verstappen, according to Tina. Wat als hij niet meedoet om de titel? After four world titles in a row, Max had to acknowledge Lando Norris as his superior last season.

Strategic Expansion Beyond Formula One Rights

Beyond the immediate star power of motor racing, DPG Media views the acquisition as a foundational step to build a secondary pillar of live sports alongside its existing library of Dutch reality television series, films, and entertainment. While the Viaplay brand name remains in temporary use, its long-term future has not yet been detailed by corporate leadership.

Long-Term Contract Pressures and Rights Expiration

The initial acquisition outlay does not cover the extensive ongoing production costs required to broadcast live sporting events week after week. The core Formula One broadcasting rights secured in the deal are scheduled to expire in 2029.
