Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has launched a scathing attack on Lisandro Martinez, blaming the defender entirely for United’s 2-0 Premier League loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Red Devils entered the match on an eight-game winless run and produced a promising first-half display, creating several clear chances.
However, United collapsed after the break as Morgan Rogers fired Chelsea ahead before Cole Palmer sealed the win from the penalty spot.
Martinez proved central to United’s downfall. The Argentine received a second yellow card and was sent off after elbowing Wesley Fofana in the box, conceding the penalty that allowed Palmer to double Chelsea’s lead.
His dismissal came just four minutes after his initial booking for a foul on Rogers.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, Schmeichel did not hold back in his assessment of the 28-year-old’s performance.
“I put this solely on Lisandro Martinez’s shoulders. This is an absolute disgrace how he played this game,” Schmeichel said.
“What he did today, honestly, I have no words.”
The former goalkeeper also referenced Martinez’s recent public criticism of the club’s hierarchy, suggesting the defender’s conduct indicates he is no longer suitable for United.
Schmeichel pointed to Martinez’s defensive lapses throughout the season and questioned his commitment.
Martinez has endured a difficult campaign, ranking among United’s worst performers for defensive errors. Against Chelsea, he lost seven of nine duels contested.
The World Cup winner’s contract runs until June 2027, though United hold an option to extend for another year.
Despite this security, speculation suggests the club could sell Martinez next summer, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona reportedly monitoring his situation.
