Will South Africa's win over Australia benefit India in WTC points table?

South Africa defeated Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the 2nd Test in Gqeberha.

Will South Africa's win over Australia benefit India in WTC points table?

After losing the first Test, South Africa slipped from second to third spot on the WTC 2025-27 points table. But a win in Gqeberha has given them a good push. Though they remain in third spot, the win has taken them to 66.67 PCT from 60 PCT.

Australia are still at the top with 75 PCT, while New Zealand are second with 72.22 PCT. South Africa’s win and Australia’s defeat have certainly benefited India. However, Shubman Gill and Co. will have to work even harder in their upcoming Test assignments. They are currently placed fifth on the WTC table 2025-27 with 51.52 PCT.

They have seven matches left to play in this WTC cycle. India will play two away tests in New Zealand and five at home against Australia. If India win all seven games, they will finish this cycle with 66.67 PCT.

In this scenario, India will hope only one team among Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand finishes this cycle with a PCT of 66.67 or more. If India win five out of seven remaining tests, they will still be at approx. 62 PCT. Australia have nine matches left to play (1 vs SA, 3 vs NZ and 5 vs IND).

Even if they lose all five to India and win the remaining ones, they will finish at 68.8%, which is enough to qualify. South Africa have six tests remaining (1 vs AUS, 2 vs BAN and 3 vs ENG).

If they beat Australia and Bangladesh, and win at least one against England, their chances are bright. So, India not only need to win their remaining matches but also need to pray that at least two teams among Australia, New Zealand and South Africa finish below them.

South Africa increased their qualification chances with a win in the second test

After a poor game in Durban, South Africa produced an unbelievable performance in the second Test against Australia at St George’s Park, Gqeberha. Captain Temba Bavuma played a match-winning knock of 179 runs off 334 balls in the first innings, when South Africa were 110/6.

Marco Jansen (85) and Simon Harmer (82) also played a key role in the Proteas’ victory. From 110/6, South Africa declared at 425/9 and bowled out Australia for just 99 runs in the first innings. Jansen took 5/33 in the first innings.

Australia showed some fight in the second innings but were all out for 295 and lost the game. With this win, South Africa have levelled the series, and the final match will decide the winner.

The final test will start at Newlands in Cape Town on October 27 at 2 PM IST. The win in the second game also helped South Africa to earn important points in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27.

Who is leading the WTC 2025-27 points table?

Australia are currently at the top of the table with 75 PCT, followed by New Zealand (72.22) and South Africa (66.67).
