This win propels the Buccaneers to 25 points from their nine matches, putting them two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who are set to face Durban City later in the evening.
In a match that showcased contrasting halves, Chiefs failed to make the most of their early advantage, with a missed opportunity in the first half coming back to haunt them. The Pirates took charge in the second half, showcasing their clinical finishing to secure victory in what was the 80th derby hosted at the historic Calabash.
Before the match, global football legend Thierry Henry, serving as the Betway Premiership ambassador, presented the match ball on the pitch. The former Arsenal forward was also seen engaging in a deep conversation with Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, reflecting on their shared history in the English Premier League.
Chiefs initiated the offense against a rearranged Pirates defense, which had Nkosinathi Ndaba stationed at right-back. Wandile Dube, who assisted Pule Mmodi during April’s scoreless derby, forced the first significant save just 13 minutes in, holding off Deon Hotto to unleash a powerful effort that Sipho Chaine managed to push away.
In the 24th minute, Pirates retaliated as Yanela Mbuthuma made a break down the wing, his low shot deflecting off defender Thabo Moloisane and outmaneuvering goalkeeper Brandon Petersen to score the opening goal. Despite Chief’s bench vocally protesting an offside, referee Luxolo Badi validated the goal—marking the 205th derby goal in Pirates’ illustrious history.
Chiefs equalized just six minutes later due to an unusual mistake from Chaine. Mfundo Vilakazi’s initial shot was mismanaged by the Pirates’ keeper, allowing Mmodi to pounce on the rebound and slot home in the 30th minute. This marked Mmodi’s second consecutive goal in the derby and the 235th all-time derby goal for Amakhosi.
Vilakazi consistently troubled the Pirates defense, almost giving Chiefs the lead before halftime with a fierce drive from a short corner, which was expertly tipped over the bar by Lebone Seema.
However, the tide shifted dramatically after halftime. In the 54th minute, Thapelo Mokobodi timed his run perfectly, breaking through the Chiefs defense and selflessly passing to Tshepang Moremi, who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to restore the Pirates’ lead.
The goal seemingly drained the energy from Amakhosi. For the last 30 minutes, Pirates dominated possession in midfield, creating several opportunities to widen their lead. Moremi struck the crossbar in the 83rd minute, while Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa squandered close-range chances that could have sealed the match earlier.
Frustration boiled over for Chiefs in stoppage time when central defender Inácio Miguel received a red card for a reckless challenge, leaving Amakhosi with just ten men before the final whistle.
This victory granted Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou his second win in three derbies, propelling the Buccaneers to the summit of South African football.
