Inside Lazio’s Wild Title Challenge: From Controversial Coach and Fan Boycotts to an Owner Facing Daily Death Threats

LAZIO has embarked on an extraordinary title challenge following their most successful start to a Serie A season during an absolutely WILD campaign.

The Laziali, one of Italy’s premier football clubs with two Scudetti to their name, may soon be on the verge of clinching a third under some of the most unpredictable circumstances.

The undefeated Roman team is sitting at the top of the Serie A standings, just three points ahead of defending champions Inter Milan, having won nine of their first eight matches.

This success continues despite a significant rift between controversial president Claudio Lotito and the fans, who claim a lack of investment—especially in transfers—has led to their discontent since 2023.

According to John Foot’s book ‘Calcio’, Lotito’s efforts to reduce the control ultras have over the club—especially regarding tickets and merchandise—have exacerbated their ongoing feud.

As reported by Goal, tensions have escalated to such an extent that supporters have opted to boycott ALL home matches at the Olimpico this season, in a desperate bid to oust the unpopular owner.

Thousands of fans declined to renew their season tickets, causing the club millions in lost revenue.

When Lazio’s season commenced in August, just over 5,000 fans—nearly half of whom were visiting supporters—attended their Coppa Italia opener against Mantova, resulting in a shocking exit.

The club’s start to the 2026/27 campaign was so grim that Roma fans even infiltrated home sections to mock their hated rivals.

Lazio supporters have continued their boycott, leading to games against teams like Genoa, AC Milan, Monza, and Parma being played in front of a sea of empty seats at the 70,634-capacity stadium.

However, the ban hasn’t affected the club’s notoriously passionate and vibrant crowd during away matches.

<p As a result, Lazio’s loyal fans have been filling the away sections at every match their beloved team plays outside of Rome.

They consistently create an atmosphere reminiscent of the Olimpico, often overpowering home supporters.

Lazio’s followers amplify their presence with loud chants along with flares and smoke bombs.

Despite their embarrassing elimination from the Coppa Italia at the hands of a Serie B team, the squad has achieved an impressive start, even better than the season they last won the Serie A in 2000.

What makes Lazio’s campaign even more perplexing is that their dazzling run is managed by Gennaro Gattuso.

The 48-year-old has faced challenges in replicating his outstanding playing career from the sidelines, despite opportunities from major clubs like Milan, Napoli, Fiorentina, Valencia, and Marseille.

His reputation reached a nadir in April when he resigned as Italy’s head coach, unable to guide his national team to the 2026 World Cup after a humiliating play-off loss to Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Nevertheless, Rino seems to be on a remarkable comeback tour, dominating the early Serie A phase, which could lead to a European return after last season’s ninth-place standing.

Unfortunately, even this remarkable run of results hasn’t eased the tensions between fans and Lotito, 69.

An investigation has been launched into attempts to initiate a change in ownership at the Olimpico, with Lotito claiming that political differences are inciting violence from fans.

The billionaire has reported that the stress has resulted in receiving 5,000 threatening phone calls daily.

Consequently, the politician has resorted to carrying two firearms for protection—reportedly having pulled the trigger once.

Lotito stated: “For a long time, I carried two pistols—one on my front and one in my back. One was even useful once, it saved me. There are political elements working against me.

“I get 5,000 threatening phone calls a day. I’m not kidding. In life, I’m a fighter, not a survivor. I’m against any form of abuse.”

Lotito has no intention of selling and stands by his record since assuming control in 2004, during which Lazio has won four Coppa Italia trophies and three Super Cups, alongside one Serie A runner-up finish.

He made headlines in May with a scathing X-rated tirade aimed at the fans, some of whom he labeled as “a*******.”

Lotito also suggested that the boycotting fans have turned him into a scapegoat for the failures of certain players, whom he claimed often “s*** themselves” when stepping onto the pitch.

The fans seem determined to continue their boycott, regardless of the team’s performance, issuing a statement revealing, “IT’S TOO LATE NOW!”
