Oscar De La Hoya Predicts A Mayweather vs Garcia Fight Won’t Happen

Rumors of a high-profile fight between Ryan Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs) and Floyd “Money” Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) have been circulating, but Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes that on February 6, 2027, Garcia will not be sharing the ring with Mayweather.

The Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Oscar De La Hoya, thinks Mayweather is capable of giving Garcia a good fight. However, he believes that instead of Mayweather, Ryan Garcia will face Teofimo Lopez (23-2, 13 KOs) on February 6th.

Back on October 21st, Ryan Garcia posted breaking news on all of his social media platforms. Garcia claimed a Hall of Fame boxer reached out to him to discuss a potential title fight.

“Trust me at first I thought this was bull***,” Garcia said. “But it’s real Floyd, and I agreed to a fight at 147 for the WBC welterweight championship of the world, 50-0 vs. the current champ.”
Garcia doubled down on the claim when he posted a second message on his Instagram account, and this message included a photo of Garcia and Mayweather in what appears to be a FaceTime call.

As time went on, fight fans were becoming skeptical about the Mayweather vs. Garcia matchup actually happening because Garcia was doing all the talking while Mayweather remained silent.

Then, finally, on November 1st, Floyd Mayweather posted the advertisement for his upcoming exhibition bout. Included in the advertisement, Mayweather confirmed the Garcia fight when he stated, “This is a lil tune-up before me and Ryan Garcia lock up Feb. 2027.”

At this point, it seemed like the bout was official, but during a recent interview with Sean Zittel, Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya made a statement that puts the fight in doubt.

“I do love that Teofimo fight, uh, sometime in February on DAZN. And you know the Floyd Mayweather thing, yes, there are a lot of rumors, a lot of speculation.Who knows? I don’t think it will happen, but look if it does, I’ve always said yeah, it’s a 50/50 fight,” De La Hoya stated.

Ryan Garcia has one more fight on his Golden Boy contract. Garcia keeps talking about Floyd, but if his promoter is leaning toward Teofimo, then there’s a good chance we will see a Garcia vs Lopez title bout in February.

Fighting the WBA welterweight world champion Teofimo Lopez makes a lot of sense. If Ryan wins, he will have a victory over a high-level opponent, and the win would equate to Garcia becoming a unified champion.

If he decides to fight Floyd Mayweather he has everything to lose and nothing to gain. If Garcia loses to Mayweather, it’s an embarrassment, and if he defeats Mayweather, nobody is going to give him credit for beating a 50-year-old man.
