Egypt Feature in Six CAF Awards Categories, Salah Misses Out
Egypt

Egypt received nine nominations across six categories as CAF announced its 2026 men’s awards lists on Wednesday.

The lists include seven Egyptian players and coaches, alongside the national team and Zamalek.

However, Mohamed Salah’s omission from the prestigious Player of the Year award leaves Egypt without a contender for the main individual prize. Reigning winner Achraf Hakimi, Sadio Mané and Brahim Diaz are among those shortlisted.

Al Ahly’s Mostafa Shobeir and Zamalek’s El Mahdy Soliman are nominated for Goalkeeper of the Year.

Shobeir was part of Egypt’s deepest World Cup run, saving a Lionel Messi penalty in the 3-2 last-16 defeat to Argentina. The Pharaohs had earlier beaten New Zealand for their first World Cup victory before eliminating Australia on penalties.

Former Al Ahly midfielder Trezeguet and Zamalek midfielder Mohamed Shehata feature in the Interclub Player of the Year category.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan and Zamalek manager Moatamed Gamal are among the Coach of the Year nominees.

Barcelona forward Hamza Abdelkarim is Egypt’s sole representative for Young Player of the Year.

The former Al Ahly striker joined Barcelona on loan in February before completing a permanent move in June. He later scored twice on his unofficial first-team debut against Birmingham City during pre-season.

Zamalek are the only Egyptian side nominated for Club of the Year, with Al Ahly and Pyramids absent.

The White Knights won the Egyptian Premier League and reached the Confederation Cup final, losing 8-7 on penalties to USM Alger after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

Egypt complete the country’s representation with a nomination for National Team of the Year.

The ceremony takes place in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 7.
