The Brazilians faced a tough elimination from the tournament after being knocked out by Angolan team Wiliete on away goals, following a 1-1 draw in Pretoria on Friday during the second leg of the second preliminary round. The first leg ended in a goalless stalemate in Lubango last weekend.
This exit is a significant disappointment for Sundowns, who entered the competition as the defending African champions. Their inability to progress to the group stages evokes memories of 2015 when they suffered a similar fate against Congolese powerhouse TP Mazembe, managed by current Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane.
Cardoso recognized the scale of the setback but emphasized that the team’s reaction would ultimately reveal its character and aspirations for the remainder of the season.
“This elimination is a significant hurdle. It is indeed a hard blow, but our strength will lie in our response, as there are still many titles to contend for,” he stated.
“We have a lot to contemplate and review together. In the end, what will distinguish Sundowns is the greatness that follows this loss.
“We are a resilient group, and it is now time to show our strength. I have full confidence that we will begin that process on Sunday. Our response is what matters most, not just the events that transpired today.
“We need to stay united, dedicated to one another, and strong privately, as we anticipate a wave of criticism. Our ability to handle that pressure will determine our potential to secure more trophies in the future.
“The message is unequivocal: we must maintain strength and avoid divisions within the club. Sundowns typically respond to setbacks by increasing their commitment.
“The season is far from a disaster. We need to look ahead. There are still numerous opportunities to pursue.”
With their continental journey now concluded, Cardoso’s squad must swiftly shift focus to domestic football to recover from the disappointment and rebuild confidence within the team.
Sundowns are set to return to the field next Tuesday as they take on Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Round of 16. The Brazilians will be keen to overcome their Champions League heartbreak and get back to winning ways.
