Ralf Schumacher accuses Lewis Hamilton of acting like ‘Al Capone’ in Ferrari radio outburst

Ralf Schumacher has accused Lewis Hamilton of acting like former Mob boss Al Capone after his radio outburst at Ferrari during the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion was furious with his teammate after the first few corners in Sunday’s race. Hamilton started from pole position, but was relegated to P3 on track after a melee with Charles Leclerc.

However, it was a comment from Hamilton that really got under Ralf Schumacher’s skin. During the red flag period in the final third of the race, the 106-time Grand Prix winner told his race engineer they have ‘big, big problems’, referring to Leclerc’s aggressive move.

“Lewis Hamilton accepted that if Charles Leclerc didn’t drive over the grass, there would be a crash,” Schumacher told Sky Sports Germany. “That’s intentional, but I have no problem with that, because it’s a racing situation where nobody wants to give up their position.

“My problem is with the drama that followed. Demanding a penalty for your teammate over the radio is unacceptable. Then to speak like Al Capone and threaten that ‘we have big, big problems’ – in my view, that’s just the dog walking its master. Something urgently needs to change.”

Schumacher continued, criticising Hamilton for going against the Scuderia’s golden rule and putting himself above the team itself – something that the F1 pundit has criticised him for before.

“Lewis Hamilton is putting himself above the Ferrari brand,” he added. “He’s acting more like a team boss than a driver.

“I wouldn’t tolerate that. I’d put both drivers in a sack, give them a piece of my mind, and explain to them how things are supposed to work at Ferrari.

“This can’t go on. Both drivers ruined each other’s race in that situation. Ferrari should have won in Mexico.”

It was also theorised by Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz that Fred Vasseur wasn’t too happy with Hamilton’s conduct from the cockpit either, with Damon Hill also highlighting how his compatriot’s protests were ‘pointless’ in the grand scheme of things.
