Dalton Knecht’s future in the NBA has been up in the air ever since the Los Angeles Lakers decided to cut the former first-round pick from their roster ahead of the 2026-27 regular season.
Amid rumors that he’ll land a two-way contract elsewhere in the league, the defending-champion New York Knicks have emerged as an interested party in signing Knecht.
“The Knicks are among the teams with interest in former Laker Dalton Knecht, per league sources familiar with Knecth’s market. Knecht was waived prior to the regular season. He’s eligible to sign a two-way deal. The Stein Line said earlier that Minnesota had interest in Knecht,” wrote SNY’s Ian Begley on X.
The Lakers guard struggled to find consistent minutes in the Lakers’ rotation in 2025-26, averaging 4.2 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.4 assists while shooting 45.5% from the field and 34.2% from beyond the arc in 54 games.
According to NBA insider Jake L. Fischer, the Timberwolves, Raptors, and Kings still have two-way spots open on their rosters, and he believes all three teams are interested in landing Knecht.
“Sacramento is definitely involved, Minnesota is definitely involved, and I’ve heard Toronto buzz for Dalton Knecht as well. All teams that I believe are looking at the former Tennessee first-round pick for a two-way contract,” Fischer said on Bleacher Report’s insider livestream.
Additionally, NBA insider Brett Siegel named the Wizards as a team Dalton Knecht could potentially head to.
“I think within the next week or two, you’re gonna see Dalton Knecht sign with a team on a two-way contract… I think the Wizards are a very interesting team to keep an eye on… Washington could be an interesting route there,” Siegel said on the Clutch Scoops podcast.
However, Siegel said he’s only hypothesizing the Wizards’ interest, and there are no reports of the team’s actual interest in Knecht. Despite a rocky season with the Lakers, Dalton Knecht is expected to generate significant interest from other teams.
The Knicks currently have Kevin McCullar Jr., Tyler Nickel, and Jaden Akins under two-way deals. Therefore, they will have to waive one of these players before potentially offering Knecht the role.
For the Knicks, Knecht could add perimeter shooting and scoring upside, making him an intriguing, low-risk option on a two-way contract. However, New York would need to open a roster spot first.
It remains unclear whether the Knicks will pursue him seriously, but I think the fit offers intriguing potential. It will be interesting to see whether Dalton Knecht joins the defending champions this season.
