EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Former Pebble Hills High School football standout and El Paso native Gael Ochoa put college football on notice Saturday with a monster performance in his first collegiate start for the Rice Owls in a 51-49 loss to Florida Atlantic.
While Ochoa was unable to lead the Owls to victory, his dominant performance against FAU dominated the college football discourse during the early afternoon portion of Saturday.
Ochoa learned he would be replacing Rice's starting quarterback Jacurri Brown — ruled out with an ankle injury — Saturday morning before the game.
Ochoa posted a phenomenal stat line you rarely see from the quarterback position — finishing with 259 rushing yards on 21.6 yards per carry and five total touchdowns (four rushing, one passing).
He also was not subtle about his play, each of the five touchdowns was an explosive highlight, averaging 64 yards across the plays: a 55-yard rushing touchdown, a 52-yard rushing touchdown, a 74-yard rushing touchdown, a 69-yard rushing touchdown, and a 71-yard passing touchdown.
Ochoa joined KTSM 9 Sports to discuss his electrifying performance.
