Long before José Mourinho commanded touchlines as an assistant, the Portuguese coach walked through the Camp Nou corridors as a polished assistant known to local reporters as the ‘Chico Martini’. During his mid-1990s tenure at FC Barcelona, Mourinho’s sharp suits, youthful energy, and quick tactical mind earned him a surprisingly warm reception among the Catalan press and players alike.

Stepping Out of the Shadows in 1996

When Mourinho arrived in Barcelona alongside veteran English manager Bobby Robson in 1996, he was largely unknown outside Portugal. Robson, then 63, had taken the managerial reins following the turbulent dismissal of Johan Cruyff. Having worked as Robson’s translator at Sporting CP, Mourinho transitioned into an assistant coaching role at Camp Nou. Journalist Marcos López noted that Mourinho deeply disliked being labeled merely a translator, insisting on his vital integration within Robson’s technical staff.

Connecting with Guardiola, Figo and the Squad

Players immediately connected with the 33-year-old assistant. Luis Martín, then covering the club for Sport, recalled that squad members frequently praised Mourinho’s direct communication and sharp football intellect. While Robson relied on video sessions that occasionally left players restless, Mourinho spoke the players’ language, dissecting opponents with modern insights that resonated with players like Pep Guardiola. Fabián Ortíz observed that the squad viewed Robson as a grandfather figure while treating Mourinho more like an approachable older brother.

Tactical Rigor and the Road to Belgrade

Mourinho’s tactical acumen quickly expanded into comprehensive opposition scouting. López recalled that Mourinho preferred watching matches from the stadium box rather than the bench to better read spatial dynamics, descending to the dressing room at halftime to adjust player positioning. Martín recounted a telling anecdote from a scouting trip to Belgrade ahead of a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade. When a flat tire threatened to derail his four-hour drive to a rival match, Mourinho personally grabbed the tools alongside a trailing sports photographer to change the wheel, ensuring he delivered his scouting report on time.

Life in Sitges and the Van Gaal Era

Life in Catalonia extended far beyond the training pitches. Mourinho settled in Sitges, embedding himself within the local community where residents regarded him almost as family. He occasionally socialized with local journalists at popular nightspots. His integration with the club and region remained total.

When Louis van Gaal succeeded Robson in 1997, Mourinho’s position at the club looked vulnerable as the Dutch manager brought his own backroom staff. However, Van Gaal quickly retained Mourinho after witnessing his tactical precision firsthand.

Mourinho Manages His First Independent Match for Barcelona

On March 27, 1998, Van Gaal handed Mourinho his historic first opportunity to manage a side independently during a Copa Catalunya semifinal against UE Lleida at the Camp d’Esports. Barcelona secured a 2–1 victory courtesy of a brace by Jofre Mateu. Xavi Hernández made his senior club debut in that same fixture, while Tito Vilanova scored the goal for Lleida.
