Manchester United have signalled that Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Sunday’s game against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

The club have confirmed they will hold a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon in an indication Carrick will not be sacked following Wednesday’s 4-1 thrashing by Como.

United, who have only won two games all season, are on a run of seven matches without a win and are only 13th in the Premier League and 20th in the Champions League table, as well as being knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

Captain Bruno Fernandes criticised Carrick’s tactics – and in particular the way the team was not told to press – in Como, a week after defender Lisandro Martinez launched an attack on sporting director Jason Wilcox.

Carrick said United’s performance in Como was “not acceptable” and that he was “angry” after it. The former United midfielder apologised to the travelling supporters in Como and said United’s defeat was “not about me”.

United’s players had a pre-planned day off on Thursday but the squad will report to Carrington for training on Friday, when Carrick will hold his pre-match press conference in the afternoon.

After facing Bournemouth at Old Trafford, United will travel to face Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea next Saturday. They will then host Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa in the Premier League before the international break.
