Mehdi Abduljabbar, Tayeb Meziani and Rodrigo Yuri score as Riffa maintain unbeaten start, while A'Ali defeat Al Najma
Riffa came from behind to defeat Sitra 3-2 at Bahrain National Stadium on Thursday, October 22, moving three points clear at the top of the Nasser bin Hamad Premier League as matchweek six got underway.
Kuwaiti coach Mohamed Mashaan's side extended their unbeaten start to six matches, reaching 14 points, with second-placed Al Khaldiya holding a game in hand.
Sitra, coached by Bahraini Hassan Sayed Isa, took the lead in the 12th minute when Mohammed Salem capitalised on Riffa's failure to clear a long ball, battling his way into the penalty area before finding the bottom corner.
Bahrain international Mehdi Abduljabbar equalised five minutes before half-time, tapping home after Rodrigo Yuri's powerful effort from outside the box struck the crossbar.
Riffa completed their comeback in the 56th minute through Algerian winger Tayeb Meziani, who beat his marker with a series of stepovers before cutting inside and firing past goalkeeper Hamad Aldoseri.
Three minutes later, Brazilian Yuri extended the advantage, meeting compatriot Wellington Moreira's pass from the left byline with a first-time finish.
Sitra reduced the deficit in the 87th minute through Mauritanian winger Bekaye Wade, who converted the rebound after goalkeeper Dziugas Bartkus saved his initial effort.
The defeat left Sitra fourth with eight points from six matches.
Meanwhile, A'Ali climbed to sixth with seven points after defeating Al Najma 2-1 at Khalifa Sports City Stadium, courtesy of a brace from Brazilian forward Diego Cardoso.
Cardoso opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute after Jassim Khelaif was fouled by Bader Abdulla.
He doubled the lead in the 79th minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake before racing clear and beating goalkeeper Ammar Mohamed.
Najma, now eighth on seven points, pulled one back in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Brazilian midfielder Rickson Barbosa converted a penalty following Yazeed Abdelelah's foul on Ali Redha.
Matchweek six continues on Friday, October 23, with Muharraq facing East Riffa at Khalifa Sports City Stadium at 5.30pm, while Al Khaldiya meet Al Ettifaq at Bahrain National Stadium at 7pm.
The round concludes on Saturday, October 24, with Malkiya facing Al Ahli at Bahrain National Stadium and Hidd meeting Manama at Al Ahli Club Stadium, both at 7pm.
