Arsenal news: Gunners target 'extraordinary' £58m talent as Mikel Arteta urged to 'move on'

Arsenal are looking to get back on track with a tough away trip to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon

Arsenal will have to do without Max Dowman against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon after his red card appeal was rejected. The Gunners winger was sent off for retaliation against Harrison Neal of Fleetwood Town during the side's shock Carabao Cup defeat on Wednesday.

Dowman was forced to watch from the changing rooms as his team were dumped out at the fourth-round stage on penalties, with the League Two outfit recording a famous win over the reigning Premier League champions. Mikel Arteta was left incensed by the teenager's actions, making his thoughts perfectly clear post-game.

He said: "When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate. It was very clear."

During his pre-Liverpool press conference, the Spaniard reflected on his reaction to Dowman, where he seemed to shout his frustration at the teen. He said: "My reaction [during the match against Fleetwood] was in the heat [of the moment] and of frustration as I know the consequences for that and especially for Max.

"It's something we discussed just before we went out because it's not the first time it's happened as it happened earlier this month with England. It will continue to happen with the way he plays and the way he attracts opponents. We have to be protective of him as he is 16 but also very straight with him about what to expect from him towards the team and the club."

Here, Mirror Football has the latest news coming out of the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners target 'extraordinary' £58m talent

Reports in Italy claim that Arsenal are showing a 'serious interest' in RB Leipzig's Antonio Nusa. The winger, who is valued at £58million, has been touted with a move to north London as Tutto Mercato reports that the Gunners are confident they could land his services.

Roma are also reportedly interested in the 21-year-old, who already has 10 goal contributions in 12 appearances so far this season. Rival striker Erling Haaland has previously sung Nusa's praises, calling him "something extraordinary."

Following a 4-1 win over Slovenia in 2024, in which Nusa scored a brace and Haaland also found the net, the Norway international and Manchester City star said: "He's something extraordinary. He's delivering at a high level, he's a great talent and he simply has to keep going."

Mikel Arteta urged to 'move on'

Micah Richards has urged Arteta to "move on" from Viktor Gyokeres and search for a replacement in January. The Swede has scored just once in 11 appearances this season and looks to be cutting a frustrated figure in front of goal.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards believes the 28-year-old should leave Arsenal to allow "top cover" to arrive in the next transfer window. He said: "I think one of the major talking points as well is Gyokeres. When he first arrived at Arsenal, I was saying to the Arsenal fans, ‘Don’t expect him to be scoring 25 and 30 goals.'

"What I really liked about him, he was good at running in behind, but he stopped doing the things that he’s really good at. He sort of looks like he has no confidence. I don’t know if the reports in the summer that they tried to get rid of him [were true] or not, but essentially he’s had enough game time to show what he can do now at Arsenal and it’s just not happening for him.

"I think in January, because of the injuries, I definitely think they should go back into the market, and find top cover around."

Richards continued: "Because the way Arsenal play, and everyone talks about they need this player, they need that player, but the reason why they’re so good is what the front players do off the ball… so, Saka and Madueke work hard in a system that works for Arsenal.

"Obviously, losing Trossard was a big miss for them in terms of what he does off the ball and how clinical he was with the opportunities given to him. But I think if they want to compete and then, say, dominate, then 100 per cent, I think they need more firepower in that forward area, for sure.

"There are so many times where Gyokeres gets in really good positions, and I don’t know if he doesn’t back himself, I don’t know if it’s confidence, I don’t know if the team doesn’t back him to score, but he just, he doesn’t put the ball away. So, then it becomes a problem. And I just feel like he needs one of those opportunities where he plays 90 minutes, he scores, he builds confidence, and it goes from there. Otherwise, you know, they’re going to have to look to move him on."
