Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool: The Players Behind a New Era at Anfield

When Jurgen Klopp walked into Anfield in October 2015, Liverpool were a famous club living largely on memory. Within five seasons they were champions of Europe and of England, and his side is now remembered as one of the finest in the club’s history. Results from each Liverpool fixture are available as they happen at dbbet, but the more interesting question is how the club got here, and which players carried Klopp’s ideas into the next era.

The Appointment

Klopp arrived with a strong reputation. At Mainz he had built a modest club into a Bundesliga side, and at Borussia Dortmund he won two league titles and reached a Champions League final. Liverpool had not won the league for a quarter of a century. At his first press conference he promised to turn “doubters into believers.”

A System Before a Squad

Klopp’s football rested on gegenpressing: winning the ball back immediately after losing it. Forwards defended from the front, midfielders covered vast distances and full-backs became auxiliary wingers. Recruitment had to serve the philosophy, so the scouting and analytics department became central. Opponents knew what Liverpool would do; very few found a way to stop it. Even sides that sat deep were rarely comfortable, because any loose pass invited an immediate counter-press.

The Early Seasons

The first years were about foundations. Liverpool reached the Europa League final in 2016 and the Champions League final in 2018, losing both. The attack was dangerous, but the defence lacked authority, and big matches exposed it.

The decisive moves were Van Dijk in January 2018 and Alisson that summer. Liverpool suddenly had the composure at the back their attack had always needed.

The Front Three

Of all the Liverpool F.C. players of the period, none defined it more than Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino. Salah broke the Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season in his first campaign. Firmino, inherited by Klopp, dropped deep, linked play and led the press. Mané supplied speed and big-game goals. Together they gave Liverpool a balance few forward lines in the Premier League era have matched.

How the Trio Broke Up

Mané left for Bayern Munich in 2022 and Firmino for Al-Ahli a year later. Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo made the attack less predictable but never quite as fluent. Salah stayed and remained the club’s most reliable scorer.

The Engine Room and the Flanks

Jordan Henderson captained the side with tireless running, and Fabinho screened the defence so the full-backs could advance. Trent Alexander-Arnold, an academy graduate, and Andrew Robertson supplied assists at a rate rarely seen from defenders, moving Liverpool’s playmaking to the wings. Rival coaches spent several seasons trying to shut down both flanks at once.

Anfield and the Mentality Monsters

Klopp also restored the bond between team and stands, treating the Kop as a real competitive advantage. After a run of late comebacks he called his players “mentality monsters,” and opponents began arriving at Anfield expecting to suffer.

Madrid, Then the Title

The pieces came together in 2019. After a 4-0 second-leg comeback against Barcelona, having lost the first leg 3-0, Liverpool beat Tottenham in Madrid to win the Champions League. A year later came the trophy supporters had waited thirty years for. His full haul at the club included:

The Champions League in 2019.

The Premier League in 2019-20.

The FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

An FA Cup and League Cups.

Departure and Succession

In early 2024 Klopp announced he would leave, saying he was running out of energy after almost nine years. He had already begun the next rebuild with Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch.

Slot’s Immediate Title

Arne Slot arrived from Feyenoord and won the 2024-25 Premier League by ten points, earning the LMA Manager of the Year award. His team controlled matches with more patience than Klopp’s frantic sides, yet the foundations were plainly Klopp’s.

A Season of Grief and Decline

In July 2025, Diogo Jota died in a car accident alongside his brother André Silva, a loss that affected the whole club. Liverpool spent heavily, adding Florian Wirtz and breaking the British transfer record for Alexander Isak, but 2025-26 brought twelve league defeats, fifth place secured on the final day and a Champions League quarter-final exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

Iraola and the Return of Pressing

Liverpool parted company with Slot on May 30, 2026, and Salah left that summer, the last member of the famous front three. Within days the club appointed Andoni Iraola on a two-year contract. At Bournemouth he had led the club into Europe for the first time with an intense pressing style close to Klopp’s. It is a deliberate choice to reconnect with the club’s identity, though Iraola has never managed a club of this size or won a major trophy, and Anfield is rarely patient.

The Current Generation

The Liverpool players of today combine the last links to the Klopp years with an expensive new intake. Van Dijk remains the defensive leader, the midfielders from Klopp’s final rebuild form the spine, and Wirtz and Isak represent the club’s ambition. Klopp’s Present Role and Legacy

Since January 2025 Klopp has served as Red Bull’s head of global soccer, mentoring coaches across Leipzig, Salzburg and New York. When 2026 reports questioned his position, executive Oliver Mintzlaff dismissed them as nonsense. At Anfield, his ideas remain visible, and every future Liverpool side will be measured against the one he built.
