Pellegrini Says He Managed Parrott Carefully in Real Betis Draw With Celta Vigo

Troy Parrott missed an excellent opportunity to give his side the lead in injury time

SEVILLE, Spain — Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has said he did not start Troy Parrott in their 0-0 draw with Real Club Celta de Vigo because he wanted to “manage him carefully.”

Pellegrini instead chose to start midfielder Nelson Deossa, with Parrott replacing him after 60 minutes.

Both players had golden chances to give their side the lead, with Deossa hitting the crossbar just after half-time and then Parrott pulling the ball wide with just Ionut Radu to beat in injury time.

“Unfortunately Troy (Parrott) struck it with the instep, very much across goal and the ball just went wide. The team’s second half was very good,” Pellegrini told DAZN after the match.

He added: “We played with Deossa there because it was a back three defence.

“Troy played four matches with his national team in three weeks. We have to manage him carefully.

“If Deossa’s shot had been a goal, the question wouldn’t even exist. These are specific moments, but I think the team performed as expected.”

Betis remain in fourth position but a win could have seen them close the gap on the top three.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Real Madrid became the first side to beat Barcelona this season, defeating the league leaders 2-1 at Camp Nou with a brace from Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe’s 11th goal in 10 La Liga matches secured victory for Jose Mourinho in his return to El Clasico 13 years after his first spell at Real Madrid ended. Real halved the gap to league leaders Barcelona to three points.

Both sides created a series of half-chances early on, but Real’s forays forward came with far more resolve.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick’s frustration on the touchline served as evidence that Mourinho’s game plan was functioning better than his own.

In the 41st minute, Yan Diomande crossed from the left and Gerard Martin’s soft clearance hit the onrushing Mbappe, bouncing off him and into the net.

Barcelona had the chance to level before the break after a fortunate ricochet, but Lamine Yamal couldn’t convert from close range.

It was a set piece that undid Real in the 61st minute, with Pedri’s reverse pass finding Raphinha in space in the box and the Brazilian finishing into the corner.

Real’s swift movement of the ball in their own half continued to expose the Barcelona backline in the early stages of the second half. However, following the goal, the visitors found it increasingly hard to escape Barcelona’s pressing.

Barcelona’s attacks were now finishing with last-ditch blocks from the Real defence, even if Mourinho’s side continued to carry a threat going forward.

That defensive conviction was rewarded with three minutes remaining. A loose touch from Barcelona substitute Gabriel Jesus set Real on the counter-attack, and substitute Eduardo Camavinga had enough pace to get in behind the defence before squaring the ball for Mbappe to tap into the empty net.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Athletic Bilbao beat Getafe 4-0 and Real Sociedad were 2-1 winners over Levante.

Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga table thanks to a 3-1 win away against Freiburg.

It was the champions’ first game since manager Vincent Kompany was admitted to hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground, with assistant Aaron Danks in the dugout in his absence.

In the other match, Hoffenheim scored three times in the final 11 minutes to beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.

Inter Milan scored twice in stoppage time to come from behind and beat Fiorentina 2-1, Marcus Thuram and a Piotr Zielinski penalty securing a stunning turnaround.

Atalanta and Frosinone drew 4-4, AC Milan recovered from their defeat to Bournemouth to beat Udinese 2-0 and Juventus beat Lecce by the same score.

In Ligue 1, surprise leaders Rennes comprehensively beat Strasbourg 3-0 to stay a point clear of Lille, who drew 1-1 with Monaco.

Marseille survived an almighty scare to beat Le Havre 4-3 but not before the visitors had scored three times in the final 13 minutes to hit back from 3-0 down.
