Tottenham Hotspur have been told that they may have a golden opportunity to sign a Bundesliga star whom they have been scouting over recent months.
The Lilywhites are expected to prioritise signing a new number nine in January, as they look to solve their issues in front of goal.
According to various reports, Tottenham are taking a close look at several number nines across Europe, as they search for a replacement for Richarlison.
That includes a 23-year-old striker, who has found the back of the net six times in seven matches this season, and the Lilywhites’ path to securing the player may have just cleared.
It first emerged last month that Eintracht Frankfurt striker Younes Ebnoutalib is of interest to Roberto De Zerbi’s side after his impressive start to the season.
In fact, the German international scored with Tottenham scouts in attendance at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt’s win over Köln just a few days ago.
European football expert Andy Brassell has now revealed that there is a power vacuum at Eintracht due to the departure of their sporting director Markus Krösche, which could provide Spurs with an opportunity to poach the 23-year-old.
When asked about the speculation linking Ebnoutalib with a move to Tottenham, Brassel told talkSPORT: “I really like Younes Ebnoutalib, because he’s come through, like a few players have, through Elversburg. Ebnoutalib is a player who has great movement; he’s a really good finisher. He’s also inexperienced at the top level.
“So he’s been brought into the Germany squad by Jürgen Klopp, and I think it’s great that Klopp is getting a look at younger players. Younes Ebnoutalib has been held up by injury, which has spoiled a lot of the back of last season for him. He signed for Eintracht Frankfurt, scored straight away and then got injured straight away after that.
“So the fact that he’s been called into the Germany squad shows you that people really believe in his potential. Hat-trick on the first day of the season at Union as well, the winner on Friday against Köln. The good thing about trying to buy him now, I think, would be a potential power vacuum for Eintracht Frankfurt.
“So maybe, if I make my offer for this star of tomorrow, and that’s what he is. He’s not a guarantee of a ton of goals yet in the Premier League at a meaningful level. At least not yet. He might be in the future, but he’s not yet. So you think, maybe I’ll make my offer and I won’t be completely held feet to the fire by Krösche, who’s very good at extracting maximum value for some of those players. The other thing is, when you have such an immense figure move on from the club, people do talk. I think it does create a little bit of uneasiness.
“So I think there will be players going, ‘Is Eintracht still the place for me to develop?’ I think not only do you look at the players who have gone there and developed, but you look at how they’ve tried to get to the next level. I suppose it was a bit of a frustration for Krösche and for the club in general. The players that have nearly signed there over the last year and a half or so.”
The centre-forward has only played 12 times for Eintracht since his move to the club in January of this year, after having suffered a ligament tear soon after completing his move.
Brassel admitted that Ebnoutalib may not be ready for a step up to the Premier League just yet, but he suggested that Spurs should not miss the opportunity to sign a player of his potential.
The expert added: “I guess the question I would like to know the answer to, and we’re going to find out in the next six to twelve months, is once Krösche’s out the door, do players still have that feeling about them?
“So I think for those reasons, even if he’s not ready, even if he’s like a prospect for the future, even if he’s a stash pick or whatever, maybe this is the right time for Tottenham to make a move.
“In terms of him being the finished article, Ebnoutalib, to help them now, or to help them in January, to take them to that next level, I don’t think he’s ready. Maybe though, the deal makes some sort of financial and sporting sense in the sense that, right, get him now, while the club’s in this sort of transitional period, and maybe we get a slightly better deal than we normally would.
“And then maybe, whether we bring him on and use him in the squad, or whether we loan him somewhere and then bring him in later, you know, sort of Luka Vuskovic situation. I think that’s a fair question to ask.”
