Express rescued by late Wamala strike as ‘Pressure Mounts’ on Byekwaso
Morley Byekwaso (R) and his assistant Edward Kaziba

Overview:

With the clock ticking down, Henry Wamala became the saviour for the Red Eagles, firing home a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser to deny the Brewers all three points.

Express FC’s miserable run in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League continued on Sunday afternoon as they fought back late to snatch a 1-1 draw against league newcomers Ntugasaze at the Kira Road grounds.

Despite salvaging a point in the dying minutes, the result extended the Red Eagles’ winless streak to seven matches, sparking furious post-match protests from fans demanding the immediate resignation of head coach Morley Byekwaso.

Late Drama Denies Ntugasaze

The match looked destined for a historic Ntugasaze victory until the 90th minute. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when imposing centre-forward Kennedy Muserero, currently on loan from KCCA FC, rose highest to head home a perfectly weighted cross from Jerome Otim.

Ntugasaze thought they had doubled their lead ten minutes later under highly controversial circumstances. An apparent own-goal by Express defender Kyambadde was disallowed after the assistant referee raised his flag for offside—a decision that left the hosts aggrieved as replays suggested the call was incorrect.

The referee’s lifeline breathed new life into Express. With the clock ticking down, Henry Wamala became the saviour for the Red Eagles, firing home a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser to deny the Brewers all three points.

Relegation Dogfight Looms

While the late goal saved Express from an embarrassing defeat, it does little to fix their worrying trajectory this season.

  • Winless Streak: Express are now winless in 7 consecutive games (2 losses, 5 draws).
  • Season Record: The seven-time champions have managed just 1 victory all season.
  • Table Standings: Express sit in 14th place with 8 points from 9 matches, hovering just above Mbarara City (15th) on goal difference.

Fan Revolt at Kira Road

The final whistle was met with volatile scenes as traveling Express supporters vented their frustration. A large group of angry fans surrounded the stadium dressing rooms, chanting slogans against former midfielder turned head coach Morley Byekwaso and blocking the team exit.

Local police had to intervene forcefully to disperse the crowd and allow the Express team bus to safely leave the venue.

What’s Next?

Byekwaso’s men must find answers quickly. Express will return home this Friday, November 5, to face another newly promoted side, Blacks Power, in a must-win encounter if the coach hopes to save his job.
