Liverpool news: Florian Wirtz injury latest as 'scary' warning issued

Liverpool's 2-0 win over Brighton on Saturday lifted them to fourth in the Premier League, with Andoni Iraola's team enjoying a strong run of form

Things are finally ticking for Liverpool, who have stitched four wins together since losing 3-0 to Manchester City earlier this month. Andoni Iraola's reign got off to a bit of a rocky start but the Reds seem to have found their rhythm.

Sunday's 2-0 win over Brighton was arguably their most convincing result of the season, with a Pascal Gross own goal and an Alexander Isak strike sealing the points for Liverpool. It ended a run of four consecutive wins for the Seagulls and five consecutive clean sheets.

Liverpool also became the first team in the Premier League to stop Brighton from scoring this season. All in all, it was a positive day at the office for the Merseyside club.

However, with injury concerns looming, and "scary" warning being issued, there's plenty for fans to mull over. Here, we're rounding up the latest Liverpool-related headlines.

Wirtz injury update

Florian Wirtz insists the injury he picked up against Brighton "isn't too bad." The German was substituted on in the 65th minute after appearing to jar his ankle in a challenge.

It caused plenty of concern, particularly given how well the £116million midfielder had been playing in the game. But Wirtz was quick to play down fears of a serious injury after the game.

"I think it should be alright," he said. "It's not too bad. I don't know much yet, we have to check it, but it won't be long."

Fans will hope to see Wirtz in action when Liverpool take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. The match sees the Reds take on a side managed by former Anfield hero Xabi Alonso, who also coached Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool told they look 'scary'

Liverpool are looking "scary" right now and will be striking fear into the hearts of their rivals, according to Match of the Day pundit Ashley Williams.

After a slow start to the season, Liverpool have picked up some momentum and are now playing fast, fluid football. Not only that, many of their top players are firing on all cylinders, including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola.

Williams believes this is a sign that Liverpool mean business and could soon be snapping at the heels of Arsenal and Manchester City. "Iraola is the type of manager that defends well," the Welshman said on Match of the Day.

"He doesn't waste time and try to build up too slowly. If he can go fast, with the pace that he has at the top of the pitch, then he does it. Now he has got those players like Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. If they are all fit and they are on the pitch, he is not going to waste any time.

"They get the ball forward, they are dynamic, and we know it is difficult to defend against pace - especially pace and willing runners in behind. We are seeing signs of an Iraola team, which is scary for the rest of the league as they just creep up."
