Gameday: Raptors @ Wizards, October 23

Raptors look to make it two in a row.

The Toronto Raptors kicked off their season in the best way possible with a 40+ point blowout win at home against the Chicago Bulls. Tonight’s opponent, the Washington Wizards, have also started their season with a win, so someone is going to take their first loss of the brand-new season. It’ll be Toronto’s first road game of the season after winning their home opener two nights ago.

Raptors outlook

Record: 1-0
Offensive Rating: 128.4 (2nd)

Defensive Rating:82.7 (1st)

Net Rating: 45.7 (1st)
Raptors previous results: vs. Bulls 135-92 W

For Toronto, their season opener went as well as it could have with four starters going for over 20 points (Immanuel Quickley, Scottie Barnes and Kawhi Leonard all coincidentally finished with 23 points). Jakob Poeltl was the only starter not to reach double-digit points, finishing with just three, but he contributed on the defensive end with a steal and a block. Ja’Kobe Walter led the bench with 10 points in 23 minutes, while Trayce Jackson-Davis finished just one point behind him in 13 fewer minutes, and Jamison Battle was just one point short of TJD. Collin Murray-Boyles also had a good outing with six points, eight rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block. Toronto had one of the best defensive units in last season’s regular season. Yes, the season is very young, and it was just the Bulls who aren’t expected to do much this season, but it looks like the Raptors could be even better on the ugly side of the ball with the addition of Kawhi Leonard.

Wizards outlook

Record: 1-0
Offensive Rating: 123.1 (6th)

Defensive Rating: 112.6 (15th)

Net Rating: 10.5 (9th)
Wizards previous results:
vs. Bucks 128-116 W

The Wizards started their season off against the Milwaukee Bucks, who had an unsuccessful start to their post-Giannis Antetokounmpo era. Anthony Davis led the way for Washington with a monster 34-point, 12-rebound performance while Trae Young also impressed with 20 points and 13 assists. A great start for the newly formed duo. Last year’s breakout Kyshawn George also impressed with 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Bilal Coulibaly had a crazy defensive night with four steals and two blocks while adding 11 points. Outside of that, they had just two more double-digit scorers from the bench, as Deandre Ayton had a successful debut with Washington, scoring 11 points in 15 minutes, and Bub Carrington got 10 points in 18 minutes. The Bucks aren’t expected to do much this season, so we’ll see how Washington matches up against a more serious opponent tonight.
