Emmanuel Latte Lath admits he misses England, saying he looks back and realises how happy he was when at Middlesbrough.

The striker enjoyed an excellent 18 months at Boro, scoring 29 goals in 67 appearances. It would lead to a MLS record transfer to Atlanta in January 2025, with Boro turning a £4m transfer into a £22.5m sale.

It came after Latte Lath initially hankered for a move to Ipswich Town in the summer transfer window, before making clear his desire to move in the winter transfer window, despite the club’s pleas to stay and try to fire them to promotion.

With no Premier League side joining the race, however, Latte Lath moved to Atlanta, where his career has since stagnated. After just 11 goals in 49 games for the MLS club, he was allowed to leave on loan for German side Union Berlin this summer.

Looking back, Latte Lath told BBC Sport: "It was good in Middlesbrough because I found a good coach and a good person. It gave me straight away confidence.

"He was a calm person, a calm coach, maybe sometimes too much, but it was needed for us.

“He knew always when and what he should say to you in the difficult moment or in the good moment. So for me, I think in that point of my life, it was really important.

“Honestly, I miss England. When I say that, people say, ‘what, even the weather?’ I say, yes because even with that, I really enjoy it, even outside football, when I look back, I was happy.”

He added: “In Middlesbrough they would say, ‘have you tried a parmo?’ I tried a parmo and it was really good!”

After his Atlanta struggles, the Ivorian is trying to get his career back on track in Germany’s Bundesliga.

So far this season, however, he has only one goal in his first six games for Union Berlin, who sit second bottom after six games. Despite that, he’s enjoying life at his new club so far.

"I arrived here and I am surprised because the fans' passion is crazy,” he said. “This is something new for me. It gives me extra muscle, another power to do well.

"Berlin is huge, I love different cultures, and you can find different cultures and people. I think I can fit in because I grew up with different friends and cultures."

Latte Lath reflected on his whole journey from street footballer in the Ivory Coast to Germany in the full interview with BBC Sport, which can be read here.
