Manchester City players given hostile reception by home fans at Villa Park

Manchester City were greeted with yet another hostile away atmosphere in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa after they were found guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League financial regulations last month.

Just two weeks after they received the same reception during a 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, Villa Park followed suit by showing their discontent towards City following the rule break.

Villa are redeveloping the North Stand behind one of the goals but it did not stop the reduced capacity from creating a noisy environment on an afternoon where Enzo Maresca’s side struggled.

Those who had taken their seats early at Villa Park booed the visiting players as they ran on for their warm-up around 40 minutes before kick-off.

Loud chants of “cheats” were aimed in the way of the City supporters and players whenever City had long spells of possession of the ball, and they were also booed off the pitch at full-time having suffered a first league defeat of the season.

City midfielder Elliot Anderson was asked ahead of kick-off whether he expected another hostile reception, to which he replied on TNT Sports: “Yeah, probably. Everywhere we go, we’ll get it.”
