The Indiana Fever’s front office is in flux three weeks after the team’s season ended in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. The Athletic’s Annie Costabile reported Friday that the Fever are firing general manager Amber Cox. The report came shortly after team president Kelly Krauskopf announced she is stepping down.
Fans responded as the report spread. One fan was among the latest to weigh in, welcoming what the two departures could mean for the franchise.
Costabile’s report cited “multiple sources who have knowledge of the decision.” Cox has been both the Fever’s chief operating officer and general manager since the team hired her in October 2024. Before that, she spent two years as COO of the Dallas Wings.
Krauskopf, who has been part of Pacers Sports & Entertainment since 1999, was directly involved in Cox’s hire, Costabile reported. Krauskopf’s announcement and The Athletic’s report together mean that the executive who helped bring Cox to Indianapolis is leaving, and Cox reportedly is as well.
The changes follow a 28-16 season. It ended when the Las Vegas Aces beat Indiana 94-83 in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 to close out the first-round series. It was the second straight postseason in which the Aces sent the Fever home.
For one fan, the changes at the top were cause for celebration: “We’re literally about to get a new Indiana Fever organization. Let’s go!”
Another fan took a sharper tone: “When you do clownery, the clown comes back to bite.”
Another fan aimed squarely at Cox: “Saw this coming. Amber Cox was one of the worst GMs in recent history. And she was talking like she was going to be there next year making changes to the Fever roster, but no. She’s finally gone.”
Cox talked about next season in end-of-season remarks reported by Yahoo Sports on October 3, covering both the roster and her head coach. Star guard Kelsey Mitchell is a free agent after playing on a one-year deal.
Mitchell is a four-time WNBA All-Star who led the Fever in scoring and has spent her entire nine-year career in Indiana. Cox spoke directly about her future: “Our goal is for her to be a Fever girl the rest of her career.”
Another fan turned the conversation to head coach Stephanie White: “Stephanie White is next lol”
White just finished her second season leading the Fever and is still the team’s head coach. Whether she would return had been one of Indiana’s offseason questions, and Yahoo Sports reported Friday that she is staying with the team for now.
Cox also spoke about White’s performance at season’s end: “I think the expectation is always championship. We didn’t meet that expectation, but we’re going to learn from it and we’re going to grow. Steph’s players know that she rides for them … It comes back to that continuity and how you build together.”
“At the end of the day, it’s their decision about whether I return or not,” White said after the season. “I’d love the opportunity. I love this franchise … and I hope to continue to be the coach.”
Those comments came before Friday’s front-office news. With Krauskopf leaving, the Fever need a new president, and The Athletic’s report would mean they need a general manager as well. Mitchell’s free agency is still unresolved.
