A defiant Donald Trump was expecting an apology from LeBron James, but the NBA icon gave no sign of concern after orchestrating a 29-point comeback for the largest rally of his NBA career.
James essentially dismissed Trump's recent criticism following his role in the Philadelphia 76ers' 114-106 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. When questioned about the U.S. President's comments regarding his conduct during the national anthem, the four-time NBA champion seemed frustrated before implying that the White House had more pressing matters to address.
The interaction came after Trump's insistence that James apologize for seemingly stretching and mimicking a golf swing during the anthem prior to Tuesday's season-opening win against the New York Knicks.
"Say that again?" James replied when a reporter initially brought up the topic during his postgame press conference. After the question was restated, he provided a brief response: "Yeah, yeah. It was a slow news day at the office, you know. Slow news day in the office."
James practically brushed off the criticism and never provided the apology Trump sought. The NBA legend has modified his customary pre-game ritual since joining the Sixers and unveiled new handshakes with teammates before tipoff against the Cavs. Trump initially shared a Truth Social post depicting James moving his arms during the national anthem at the season opener against the New York Knicks, characterizing the gesture as disrespectful.
"While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country!" Trump wrote. He labeled James a "TOTAL DISGRACE" and demanded he apologize to American military personnel who died defending the flag.
The majority of responses suggested James was simply practicing his golf swing, a hobby he picked up less than three seasons ago while still playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. Trump himself has been an avid golfer since childhood and owns over 13 courses globally.
The U.S. President's outburst came before the Cavaliers established their first 29-point lead of the season in front of their home crowd. Tyrese Maxey fueled the comeback with 32 points, while Joel Embiid contributed 24 and Jaylen Brown chipped in 21.
James finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals as Philadelphia overcame the deficit and took a 2-0 lead. The 76ers will aim to maintain their unbeaten record when they face the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday.
