Summerville swept the 5A Region 5 Cross Country Championships Oct. 21 at Wannamaker County Park.
The Green Wave Boys finished with 19 points, scorching the competition to win another region championship. Ashley Ridge (57 points) placed second and Stratford (96) third. Trailing were James Island (115), West Ashley (124) and Fort Dorchester (137).
The Summerville Girls also torched the competition, also finishing with 19 points. James Island (56) placed second and Ashley Ridge (83) third. Rounding out the field were Stratford (106), West Ashley (122) and Fort Dorchester (171).
“We were hoping they would run PR’s and they did,” said Summerville coach Kelly Hazel. “I’m very excited with their performance today. We wanted them to dominate because we feel they can really do well at the state meet. A lot of them had a PR and their best time on this course.”
Just before the start of the event one of Summerville’s runners severely sprained his ankle and had to go to the emergency room so coaches were concerned the others might be a little tentative in the races, but they weren’t.
Senior David Greer led Summerville, winning the boys’ race with a 15:44 time. The top 12 runners receive All-Region Honors and the Green Wave claimed eight of those spots. Trailing Greer were Jack Torkel (15:47), Jack Alberti, Fort Dorchester’s Cade Merfeld, Ashley Ridge’s Jonta Richardson (16:21), Luke Otey (16:30, Matthew Ruffalo (16:36), Stratford’s Dalton Gillespie (16:43), Willis Rogers (16:45), Caleb Blackwelder (16:51), Ashley Ridge’s Dominick Granato and Gavan Cone.
