Defender Mercelyne Meja has backed Ulinzi Starlets to translate their impressive start to the Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League into a serious title challenge.

Meja, who joined Ulinzi from Trinity Starlets last month, has started all six league matches since her arrival. She has helped the Soldiers maintain a perfect record, winning all six matches to sit top of the standings with 18 points. Ulinzi have scored 20 goals while conceding just two, boosted by Saturday’s 1-0 victory over defending champions Kenya Police Bullets in the Disciplined Forces derby.

“With the title race expected to intensify as the season progresses, maintaining defensive organisation will be central to our ambitions,” Meja said.

The defender’s immediate integration into the starting line-up gives coach Collins Ochieng’ another reliable option as the team seeks to maintain consistency.

Ochieng’ believes thorough preparation and the players’ tactical adaptability will be crucial to sustaining their momentum, as shown against Police Bullets.

“We analysed our opponents well, quickly adapted to their tactical shifts, and executed our game plan effectively. Good character and preparation made the difference. Kudos to the players and the technical bench for a job well done,” Ochieng’ said.

Meja’s primary goal will be to remain fit and consistent as Ulinzi chase their first league title. She comes off a standout season with Trinity Starlets, where she played every minute of all 20 league matches.

Ulinzi first targeted the defender after she helped Trinity defeat the Soldiers 1-0 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on November 15, 2025, courtesy of a 37th-minute goal from Eglay Mukhwana.

“This transfer gives me an opportunity to compete for silverware with a team currently leading the standings,” Meja added. “Beyond our collective ambition to challenge for the title, I want to establish myself as a consistent performer and enhance the team’s defensive strength.”

Ulinzi Starlets will face Vihiga Queens this weekend.
