Canelo Alvarez returned to action with a relatively forgettable decision win over Christian Mbilli amid an awkward backdrop in Riyadh tonight.

Fans, experts and even those directly involved with undercard fighters had been calling for the event to be cancelled amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Despite their concerns, Turki Alalshikh pushed through with the show, albeit with a different style of broadcast.

What’s next for Canelo Alvarez?

After reclaiming WBC gold at super-middleweight, who should Canelo Alvarez fight – if anyone?

In a sporting sense, it was a massive night for boxing icon Alvarez who was last seen in September of 2025 when he suffered a decision defeat to Terence Crawford on Netflix. Having been through it twice before, though, he never considered retiring and ultimately opted to get back in the ring tonight.

Canelo Alvarez makes successful boxing return in Riyadh against Christian Mbilli

Ever since Saudi Arabia has become the power player in world boxing, it has always made for a strange backdrop. Tonight was no different, and perhaps the most awkward of all given political tensions in the region.

It didn’t deter Canelo Alvarez, whose star power is such that he still commanded the final ring walk despite being the challenger for Christian Mbilli’s WBC super-middleweight title. Their initial round saw the Mexican working behind his jab and keeping his rival at range.

Mbilli’s performance in the opening four stanzas defied his nervous pre-fight energy as he went on the offensive and managed to land at a clip that likely surprised the icon standing across from him. Alvarez was on the back foot for the entirety of those first 12 minutes, scoring with his jab.

By the halfway point, Alvarez had really only shown the Kingdom Arena crowd a round or two of his trademark style and power. However, that all began to change in the seventh as Mbilli slowed and his challenger was able to land a massive uppercut that wobbled the champion.

In round eight, there was a bizarre moment when Alvarez was hit behind the head during an Mbilli flurry. It appeared that the referee was going to break them up, but when the legend complained that it was the third time, he opted to take a point from Mbilli.

As the pair headed into the championship rounds, both men slowed and it ended up being fought at essentially a sparring pace. That was until an explosive last round, where Mbilli might have had a chance at a stoppage if he put his foot on the gas.

Instead, Alvarez beckoned him on but ultimately took control in the final exchanges and cruised to a Unanimous Decision victory and back into his role as super-middleweight world champion. The scores were 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110 in favor of the Mexican icon.
