CAF Champions League: Egyptian clubs win while Young Africans score four in first legs

The first legs of the CAF Champions League 2026-2027 second preliminary round took place from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October, with several clubs moving closer to a place in the group stage.

There were away victories, home wins and draws across the ties, giving a number of sides an advantage before the return matches, which are scheduled for 23 to 25 October. The meeting between 15 de Agosto and Simba SC is the only first leg still to be played, with that match set for Tuesday 20 October.

Friday 16 October

Egyptian clubs made a successful start to their campaigns on Friday. Pyramids FC secured a 1-0 away victory against El Merriekh SC Bentiu, while Zamalek recorded the same scoreline at APR FC.

Both teams will take a narrow lead into the second legs as they attempt to reach the group stage.

Saturday 17 October

Young Africans produced one of the weekend’s most convincing results, winning 4-0 away at CFFA in Madagascar.

Orlando Pirates also returned from an away match with a victory, beating African Stars 1-0. TP Mazembe and Club Africain played out a 1-1 draw, leaving their tie evenly balanced ahead of the return fixture.

RS Berkane defeated Star Sport Academy 2-0, while FC San Pedro edged past FC Nouadhibou 2-1.

Sunday 18 October

Rangers International established a two-goal advantage over MC Alger with a 2-0 win. Scottland FC matched that score against Petro Atletico to claim a similar lead.

Al Hilal also put themselves in a strong position, winning 2-0 away to Sidama Bunna.

The reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, were held to a goalless draw by Wiliete SC. Horoya AC claimed a 1-0 victory over Al Merrikh, while Colombe Sportive won 2-0 at Teungueth FC.

Esperance de Tunis suffered a surprise defeat in Libya, losing 1-0 to Swehly SC. ASEC Mimosas avoided defeat against MAS de Fes, with Bamba Souhalio scoring a late equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw.

Tuesday 20 October

The first-leg schedule will conclude when 15 de Agosto host Simba SC on Tuesday.

The second legs will then be played between 23 and 25 October, when the teams will compete to secure their places in the CAF Champions League 2026-2027 group stage.
