Migori Youth eager to build on maiden SportPesa League win, says coach Babu

Migori Youth coach Salim Babu says they will build on their maiden SportPesa League win against Mombasa United in the upcoming games.

Migori Youth beat fellow debutants Mombasa United 2-0 on Sunday at Awendo Green Stadium to record their first win of the season. Philemon Nyakwaka and Fred Ologi were on target for Babu’s charges.

“After three consecutive draws, we needed a win to motivate the players. The win was very important for the players, fans and the technical bench. It will motivate us in the upcoming games,” said Babu.

Migori Youth’s next assignment is against Mara Sugar at William Ole Ntimama Stadium on Saturday.

“We want to build on the momentum and win against Mara Sugar. It’s a team we know very well,” said Babu.

Babu has backed strikers Nyakwaka, Clinton Okoth and Nehemiah Onchiri to rediscover their form.

Nyakwaka previously featured for Mara Sugar and KCB FC, while Onchiri played for Shabana FC and Mombasa United.

Okoth played for Migori Youth during the 2019/2020 season before joining SportPesa League giants Gor Mahia. He, however, failed to click and returned home.

“They are young players and I’m confident they will shine. They were top strikers in NSL,” noted Babu.

With five strikers, including Christopher Koloti, formerly of AFC Leopards, and Francis Memusi formerly of Murang’a Seal, competition for starting places in the team is tough.

“I have challenged them to give their best once given a chance. They lack the experience, but I have confidence in them,” added Babu.

Babu emphasised the need to collect as many points as possible in the first leg.

“The second leg is always tough for promoted sides. That’s why we are focusing on collecting as many points as possible to help us survive relegation,” said Babu, who is also the national U23 team assistant coach.
